Why are dine-in Chinese restaurants still closed?

In NOLA, almost every Chinese restaurant went strictly to take out during Covid/April 2020. (Only Ming’s on the Lakefront allows dine-in and of course they are closed on Sundays.)

But 99% have not reopened, and some I’ve called have said they may not ever reopen their dining rooms. WTF? Is there a conspiracy just to piss me off? Is there a Chinese Restaurant Association where they all agreed to stand together and lose dining room business?

I get if you are short on help/staff, but even then, other short-staffed businesses have reopened & simply cut hours or limited tables. It’s been 21 months and they are still stuck in April 2020.

Chinese restaurants are either staffed by the owner's family members and/or illegal Mexicans. They shouldn't be having labor issues.

Are you talking about buffet-style restaurants?

If you are, I would think buffets, where everyone is either an adult leaving fomites on the ladles and tongs or kids straight up sneezing on food, would be the last restaurants to re-open after a pandemic.

I dont know, but I work in the Westchase District of Houston so Chinatown is right there. I’d say 75% of the restaurants on Bellaire are ‘to go’ only and have been like that the six months I’ve been there. Another handful seem to have changed in the past week. I went to 3 places last week because the first 2 were closed for inside business and were not the week before.

They take their Covid serious.

No, not buffet (though I haven’t checked on those.) The regular sit down restaurant with a waitress/menu kind.

I don’t know but all the Chinese restaurants up here have the inside boarded up like Fort Knox. You can go inside to get carry out but they have it pretty much boarded up besides the cashier stand where they have a little hole where they slide the food to you.

Yep, they leave the chairs up and some even rope the shite off with construction tape. They would be online only if the had the tech to serve from an ATM.

I’d imagine many if not most Chinese restaurants make most of their money from deliveries/take-out, so that’s probably a factor (i.e., why waste time and resources on that part of the business at this time).

I also think that there’s a cultural aspect involving COVID that I’ve noticed up here, in that many Asians tend to be very COVID fearful and overly compliant with government mandates.

It’s because they never wanted to welcome Americans inside. Covid was perfect for them. They take your skrilla and you can’t stay around.

Fwiw, the one in Youngsville has been open to the public. They love the USA people.

I can’t say your wrong about the ones on Bellaire because I avoid buffets. I hate a big lunch. That’s f’n strange that the buffets are open and not a majority of the sit downs.

Id start a thread on the food board but I don’t know or can’t type out 75% of the names of the restaurants. Xing Zong Xui noodle house. shite like that.

Maybe bigger money in take out than dine in. Less staff overhead.
