Why are cigarettes legal and MJ isn’t?

This is an oft repeated question. I don’t smoke weed, and I quit vaping. I understand the connection between schizophrenia and weed. But I also understand the connection between the tobacco industry and lung cancer. People will answer with “the government hasn’t figured out how to tax it yet”, but that doesn’t feel satisfactory. Cigarettes should be illegal, tax or not.
The industry that thrives off addicting kids and then killing them for the rest of their lives should be eliminated whether the government can tax it or not. The USA would be better off without it, the economy would roll along fine without Juul or Marlboro. Maybe even better.
ETA: People make billions off legally addicting their “customers” to a “product”. Others are thrown in prison for the same sort of business on the street. This is the one industry I support dismantling. They all should be in prison.

The OT agrees with this 100% usually, but will tell me in this thread that weed is way worse and worth jail time versus the billions in profits the tobacco industry will make this year.
ETA: I think neither should be unregulated because weed can harm too. It’s just insane that tobacco gets away with what it does.

To be clear I support their legalization. . .but nobody has ever looked at someone burning and thought "what a class act". Smoking weed is as trashy as smoking cigarettes, and even smells way worse, and I hate the smell of cigarettes.

I agree! I'm just point out it's also trashy.
Weed smell is the worst. F'n reeks. Cigarette smell lasts the longest, though. Both are trashy af, though.
