My son will go to a Catholic School because I want him to be in an environment where people can talk about God and not be sued or fired.
My kid will go to a public school in Williamson County, TN for those reasons, as well as a private school education at a public school price.

I grew up in public schools until 8th grade. I attended park view oaks, southeast, and kenilworth. I graduated from catholic. I was at kenilworth in 2003 and everyone was checked with medal detector wands coming off the bus for safety. Cops stood in every hallway. Because of where I lived I was going to be forced to attend Lee high school. I was inspected for guns and drugs in middle school. What the hell do you think would've happened in high school? I chose to get a job in high school in order to pay my way through catholic. What the hell is a magnet school? Scotlandville? I travelled there once for a game and I'm pretty sure the damn sign was falling off the front of the school. I know after we beat them we had to hightail it on the bus so we didn't get killed. Baton Rouge public schools are horrible and dangerous. There is no such thing as a damned magnet school in Baton Rouge. For the person that said their kids will have to face reality eventually, send your kids to a private school and tell them to get a job and pay part of the tuition. Public school reality is setting yourself up for failure. CHS '09

Public schools are a hazard due to the attendees.....is what it is. There is a reason Zachary, Dutchtown, etc. have what are considered much better public schools than BR. They still fall waaay short and I'd never send my kids there.
BRMHS is a great academic institution that is harder to get in but doesn't have the activities others do I.e. football. Granted its not anything like it used to be.....the bar has dropped.
CHS comes no where remotely close to BRMHS' acamedics. Period.
I am fortunate. I live in the Woodlands and my kids get a rock star public education.

There are kids who go to BR public schools and continue on to do well in college and life. The OT just doesn't think their kids can manage it.

Definitely not degrading Baton Rouge High. Great school, great academics, but just like you said not much of an athletic program, probably because funding is spent towards academics which is good. I do believe in being well rounded though. 95% of the students at catholic were in at least one sport and one club.

They are not against public schools they are against EBR public schools. They move to the burbs and utilize those public schools. Central broke away from EBR and saw an immediate increase in home sales and school enrollment.

Well, here in Pointe Coupee, one has only two choices for the kids. Been that way for over 40 years.
Catholic High or False River. Public schools are really bad.

I went to college did fine. I ended up not enjoying it and enlisted. The goal is not to get the kid into college. The goal is to have the student in a nurturing environment.

Guess I should be down in the gutter by your logic.
Come on, UT. You're a smart guy and and outlier. You know the condition of the majority of BR's public schools, especially high schools. One of my friends teaches at Scotlanville. She used to teach in the non-magnet portion and her stories were horrific. Luckily she now teaches kids in the magnet department and it's much better. I know a few people from McKinley who did well for themselves. I also know more who did not do well for themselves.

Maybe for smaller % of the idealistic parents like the ones who put their kids in the International School as a toddler
Again, nothing wrong with enlisting or going to work after HS. It's just that the allure of magnet and private schools is
1. they are better prepared for rigors of the colleges that are a tad harder than SLU or Nicholls.
2. it's much safer from violence(we know that's not true for drugs.
So the effort put forth by the parents is the funny part.
And thanks for your service!

True dat, mamasquirrel. My oldest is approaching that age/grade where we are talking about whether she goes to St. Amant or SJA for HS. In EBR that wouldn't be a contest.

This is simply not true. Baton Rouge High is as good as any Private school as far as academics.
Problem with BRHS is that it isn't for everyone because it is a limited Highschool as far as sports. No football, basketball, or baseball so many kids do not want to attend a school like this but as far as academics it is very good.

Precisely why I went from McKinley Middle on to my assigned public school, Woodlawn. Great decision for the sports as well as reconnect with neighborhood friends I hadn't seen in classrooms since 3rd grade. But looking back through a parent's-colored glasses, I get a little freaked out. I could've easily lost my way and never ended up at LSU.
