John Basilone Memorial Field

A few years back, I drove from NY to DC with my brother in law and his three sons, who were about 6, 9 and 12 at the time. We were stuck in traffic on the GW, so after 2 hours of driving we were barely into NJ and a couple of the kids needed to piss. As good fortune would have it, we were at the John Basilone Memorial Rest Plaza on I-95. There's a big bronze statue of Basilone and his water cooled .30 caliber machine gun. I immediately stop the kids and give them an impromptu lecture on Basilone at Guadalcanal, his Medal of Honor, and how he left the safety of selling war bonds to go back into action and being KIA on Iwo Jima. The youngest was getting antsy and his father told him to be still and pay attention because he ought to know about this great man's sacrifices. The kid says, "We stopped because I have to pee! Can Uncle ______tell me the rest after I use the bathroom?"

There's schools, parks, roads and a variety of other stuff, including a highway rest area, all over NJ memorializing John Basilone. His wallet surely said "Bad Muthafricka" on it.

We had different ranks meaning different jobs. Along with that comes different opportunities. We all took the oath. I don't know of anyone that ran. They were ALL the greatest to me.

If you force me to separate one soldier from another the best I can do is choose those that came home in boxes or not at all.

Probably some American Indian who held off another tribe and saved his tribe's virgins from being de-flowered.

Or maybe some American soldier from South America who did the same.

Benedict Arnold. He was working to stop domestic terrorism 225 years before it was cool to fight terrorists

Lot of deserving soldiers mentioned. My favorite is Jack Lucas, because he has a great story from his service, but primarily because of the story of his later years.

He was a true American hero, and was basically homeless. A regular joe decided that was bullshite, and saved his arse. That's America.

Carlos talked a lot about ballistics and I learned a lot from it.

I read his book as a teenager and it was incredibly interesting. The thought of sitting completely still for days on end was hard to comprehend.

Chesty Puller was an incredible marine. At one time he was stationed in NOLA at Jackson Barracks I do believe.

Read a book on Hathcock as well. He was probably the most bad arse sniper ever in the US military.

One not many have mentioned and was shot in the Spanish American war leading a volunteer infantry was Teddy Roosevelt. That included the battle of San Juan. That group was known as the Rough Riders.
