Had an uncle who was a Marine, fought on Iwo (second wave) and Okinawa. Fought in Korea. Fought in Vietnam. Obviously life long marine, died a gunny Sargent.

A hard man. Died of liver cancer, probably caused by alcohol. Can't say I blame him.

Point.. there probably are quite a few of these lifelong military men that we never hear of.

But I'm hesitant to label any General as the greatest soldier - it's a completely different set of criteria that makes someone a great commander or a great warrior.
