Caught a YouTubevideo, an interview with a 90 year old SS officer. One of the many disgusting things he said, this was among the craziest: " Himmer? He was actually a pretty decent fellow". A true coward, as the leader of the SS & architect of the death camps, he observed one mass shooting of Jews early in the invasion of Russia. Pieces of brains flew onto his coat & he had to be helped away from the grave site. Later, as the gas chambers were first starting to kill millions of Jews, looking thru a peep hole into a packed chamber, he almost lost it & again, had to be helped away.

I think Heydrich is widely regarded as the single worst of the Nazis. He’s the winner, and had Heydrich ran the Third Reich over Hitler, that would have spelled trouble for the world and the trajectory of the war.
And Heydrich himself may not have actually been antisemitic, just a complete sadist who was incredibly competent and efficient at his job. Heydrich did mass murder because he thought it was fun. Hitler would have been a middle of the road Assyrian King, but Heydrich would have been among the worst of the Assyrian Kings.
Landa from Inglourious Basterds is largely based on Heydrich, which is why it’s so ominous when Landa speaks of Heydrich to the farmer he’s pleasantly and implicitly threatening that he himself is even WORSE than Heydrich.

Himmler. Also the most evil. As was said above when the end was near he tried to cut a deal with the Allies to save his skin. Goebbels killed himself and his family to go down with the ship with Hitler.

Himmler would cover his ears when he was present for the executions he ordered because he couldn't stand the screams of those who weren't killed immediately.
