I asked ChatGPT to rank who it thinks are the top 10 most famous people from New Orleans and this is what it gave me:
Tier 1: Extremely Famous and Culturally Relevant
Lil Wayne – Widely recognized as one of the most influential rappers of the 21st century. He remains relevant through both music and pop culture appearances.
Peyton Manning – A legendary NFL quarterback with a comedic media persona post-retirement. His TV commercials, NFL broadcasts, and general charisma make him universally known.
Ellen DeGeneres (Metairie) – Despite her controversies, Ellen remains well-known. Her career as a talk show host and comedian solidifies her place in public consciousness.
Tier 2: Well-Known but Not Always Top of Mind
Louis Armstrong – While Armstrong is arguably one of the greatest musicians of all time, general knowledge about him has faded slightly, especially among younger generations.
Lee Harvey Oswald – Infamously tied to the JFK assassination, he is known more for the event than his New Orleans roots, though conspiracy theorists and history buffs ensure his name remains alive.
Tyler Perry – While more synonymous with Atlanta, Perry’s ties to New Orleans make him worth mentioning. His cultural impact through films, shows, and media ventures is enormous.
Anthony Mackie – As the actor behind Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Mackie has become quite recognizable, particularly among younger fans.
Tier 3: Influential but Niche Audiences
Harry Connick Jr. – Known for his music and acting career, Connick remains beloved but appeals more to an older demographic and jazz enthusiasts.
Fats Domino – Like Armstrong, his contributions to music are monumental, but he may not be as well known among younger audiences.
Honorable Mentions
Reese Witherspoon – She has New Orleans connections through family, though she isn’t typically thought of in that context.
Eli Manning – Famous but overshadowed by Peyton in terms of public persona and post-NFL life.

My vote is Louis Armstrong
When I live overseas, people always asked me which part of the United States I came from. Many of those conversations went like this:
Aussie yabbo: "Oi, Yank. What part of the states you from?"
Me: "Louisiana."
Aussie yabbo: *blank stare*
Me: *sigh* "New Orleans."
Aussie yaboo: "Ohhh Louis Armstrong and Mardi Gras!"
Me: "Yeah, that's pretty much it."

Did you just put Lil' Wayne ahead of Satchmo and Fats?

I just copied what the AI said, but if we are talking about the most famous right now, Lil Wayne has 37.5 million monthly streamers on Spotify, whereas Fats and Armstrong have 1.2 and 11.4 million streamers per month respectively. So by that metric it isn't even close, but personally I like all three very much.

If you polled people world wide I think it would vary greatly by age and region. I can’t name anything Lil Wayne has done, but that doesn’t mean he’s not famous. I’m just older and not his target audience.
Same thing for Armstrong and Fats and younger people.
John Goodman is my vote.

I think you way overestimate the awareness of the under 40 crowd.
I would be shocked if 5 of 10 of those under 40 could pick Oswald out of a photo lineup. Figure Peyton would be in the 90s%.

popularity of their music isn't necessarily a measurement of fame though.
I know who all 3 of them are, but don't stream any of their music.
