Mother.

Wife only has one or 2 dishes and she learned from her mother. But she is a better cook than her mother.

My mom and MIL are probably tied for their cooking abilities, they both make their own dishes equally well.

Then it's me.

My wife

My mother doesn't cook much anymore, well since she died and all. She was a better cook than my wife because I grew up eating her food. That said, my wife is a freaking chef. Keeps me good and fat.

me... I am...

But my Grandmother could make a meal out of nothing... Raising a family with two boys in the Great Depression will do that to ya.

but you still need to tell her you like the food

its a no win situation if you dont, even if she agrees she isnt a good cook, she will still get hurt feelings if you dont pretend she is a good cook

Both about equal although they cooked vastly different things...my mother is an old southern lady, my wife is a second generation Italian. Mama don't know shite about macaroni and gravy unless it comes out of a jar and a box. On the other hand my wife couldn't cook a decent pone of cornbread to save our lives, we'd all be fricked.

Neither of them could hold a candle to my Paternal Grandmother though...that woman was a magician. She cooked about 2 dozen biscuits everyday for about 50 years and they were like eating air...flaky outside, fluffy almost nothingness on the inside. She also knew about 30 ways to cook beans and collard greens and could fry chicken in a cast iron skillet that was crispy as hell and not in the least greasy...and did not have to finish in the oven to do it. Her country fried steak would be my last supper if I ever make it to death row. She raised about an acre of vegetables every summer and her creamed and fried corn would make your lips fight one another to get more. She could even boil okra and it was delicious...almost an impossible stunt. Fried okra, steamed or fried squash, snap beans and field peas? Forget about it...that woman was a genius in the kitchen and a saint.

My wife. 10x the cook that either my mom or stepmom is. Both of my granny’s would trump my wife though.

Rank order:

Mom - not even a LA native and makes the best gumbo I’ve ever had.

Wife - Learned from her maternal grandma (RIP) and some from my mom.
Me - Learned most of what I know from the both of them. I do almost all of the cooking now.

Oldest Daughter/Niece are tied but getting really good.

MIL - I have literally never seen the woman cook a meal. Not ever.

my mom could throw together day to day blue collar Cajun dishes while doing 10 other things, and it would almost always be delicious. I still miss the shrimp stew, cabbage rolls, round steak and gravy, smothered chicken, meatball fricasse, tarte a la bouille, fig preserves, etc.

My wife focuses while making fancy meals / baking like she's studying for the CPA exam, and it is usually delicious. She does make a good etouffee, but from a recipe. My mom never used a recipe in her life.

So, they both have their own paths. Mom wins daily meals. Wife wins glory meals. I can cook either because I'm Batman.
