I had just graduated from USL in May. While working a summer job, me and 2 frat brothers decided to go to the Olympics in Montreal, which we did. We figured that none of us would ever get another chance to go. Turns out, in 1996 I went again, this time with my wife and kids.

Got to do the visit inside the Freedom Train. Think it stopped just south of the LSU campus. It visited every state capital.

I know they're not worth anything beyond face value but I still collect any that I come across in the wild

Yep. Red, White, and Blue painted fire hydrants all over the city. It was without question the biggest Fourth of July celebration I’ve ever experienced as well.

I also recall 7Up made special cans with some random looking colors on the back. When you collected all of them and stacked them in a pyramid, it made a big picture of Uncle Sam.

It took forever to find the last two cans, but I still have them today, in a trash bag in the attic.

It was my last year of high school and the teachers all pushed us to chose red, white, and blue for our class colors. So we overwhelmingly voted for dark blue/light blue. Never tell HS students what to do.

We won the neighborhood fireplug painting contest with a US flag design. Watched the July 4 fireworks in downtown Pittsburgh, it was a great show. It was a good time to be in Pittsburgh, the Steelers won the Superbowl, Pitt won the college championship, the Pirates still had a good team, and the Penguins were on the rise.

Heck yeah! I was eight years old. It was hot as hell outside that day. We watched President Ford ring the Liberty Bell on TV then went out and rode around in Dad's '57 Thunderbird for a few hours. No A/C in it, just the top down and the wind blowing all around.

Still have my collection of pewter Bicentennial memorial plates, my old Cub Scout uniform with the Bicentennial neckerchief and slide, and all kinds of other stuff. I'm hoping to get it all out again for the 2026 250th Independence Day. (What would that even be called?)

I've been collecting them for years. Everyone painted fire hydrants to look like Continental Soldiers

Remember that too, but it wasn't random, if you count there are 50 cans, and each can on the front green section also had an outline, name and info of a corresponding STATE. 50 states, 50 cans.
