I drive a car, and the wife drives a SUV. I get to drive the SUV when we go home to Lake Charles every other month or so...

First car was one I bought myself- an 02 Saturn sedan in 2006. Perfect for just getting around town and to and from campus. No college kid needs anything fancier.
Sold it when I moved to NYC.

I've driven a truck and an SUV within the past 5 years. I now have a simple, base model malibu and have no regrets. It's not a bad looking car, and it absolutely helps out the wallet. It was relatively cheap too even with only 11,000 miles on it at purchase. I love it, and don't really care if it's not "manly". It suits my needs.

I ordered a vehicle and got a good deal but it's easy to get a great deal on an F150
Your only risk is trading one in. THey wouldn't give me a price on my trade until the new truck came in and they already had my deposit. Luckily they ended up offering me fair value on my trade and I didn't have to threaten to walk away down 500 bucks
