The year I lived in Houston(2013 holiday season) I made the trip home to see family. This year I'll be making the trip from St. Louis home but i won't be leaving out until Christmas Day.

I did not do it this year. I traveled a lot during the fall and decided not to this year.

I don't mind the travel part. I just don't like being away from home or being at my in-laws house, mainly bc they are crazy. If I don't go, the in-laws and my kids give me a hard time.

We don't have it to bad with the 3 hr drive, but we informed everybody that this is the last Christmas we will be making an overnight stay. I want my child to enjoy the excitement of waking up in their home on Christmas morning and running in to see what Santa brought. And to prevent the almost divorce that happens as we pack and load up all the crap we have to take. We will drive down Christmas Eve morning split time between the two families and head back home. Been traveling for 10 yrs and it's time for a change.

Nothing like loading up that car with all that crap. We usually don't speak to each other the first hour of the drive. Tensions run very high. Lol.

We live in Central LA and have to travel to the wife's parents place in Massachusetts every couple of years...
It's a brutal drive, but it actually feels like Christmas up here. There's actually snow on the ground as opposed to just leaves

Not anymore.
We have three children and their spouses and seven grandchildren.
We told them to establish their own Christmas traditions, NOW, and not lose their joy in trying to be everywhere at once

My parents paid for me to fly in because they knew insure as hell wouldn't come if i had to pay for it. They accidentally booked the flight for the wrong date and I had to get shite on for working from home for almost a week. Flight is good but working from home sucks and is miserable. And people are already at each ither's throats. It's just been brilliant so far.

I've traveled to see my grandparents in California every Christmas for 28 years. Don't mind it but it would be nice to just go my hometown now that I don't live there anymore

We do. I don't mind the travelling so much. The only thing I hate is that we don't get Christmas morning with just us. For now, it includes the in-laws since we are at their house. I can't see staying home and being just us though. I come from a family where it's nearly 50 of us that get together on Christmas day.

Houston to BR is a short but painful trip. Once the oldest kid turned 3 we decided we were staying here for Santa. Best decision to state that fact and let the family deal with it. Last year we drove back on Christmas Day and this year driving back in the 27th to spend the rest of the week in BR. We never see the entire family anyway and my cousins are all starting their own traditions as well, it was time we started ours. Spend more time this week with friends here we spend all year with and see family on thanksgiving, week after Christmas and random other extended weekends.

My wife and her sister decide everything.
It's ok, but a little weird spending Holidays with non-Christians.
It's expected to spend every Christmas together.
My brother and I go to SECCG together every year. I put myself on call Thanksgiving next year to avoid 3 trips in such a short time.
It is what it is. A hassle to travel because everyone is traveling.

My family rotates the holiday get-togethers each year between christmas and New Years. This year we celebrated Christmas during thanksgiving in Florida. Either way I have to travel from California to the south, as I am the only family member out west.

I usually travel home just for Christmas, so it's really not a big deal. I would hate to do that for every major holiday though.

For those of you with kids and live far away, how do your wives feel about not going to see family on Christmas?
I'm with most of you and want my kids at home but my wife is too considerate of our parents and would insist on traveling.

I don't want to sound like a Scrooge, but for me, the holidays are a time for relaxation. I don't have kids, and while I have a SO, I'm not married. This means I get to travel to one of my sister's places where the rest of the family will congregate. I don't mind the drive because it's my last moment of tranquility.
When I walk in, I have 7 nieces and nephews all under age 8...I have whipped husbands who don't know what goes on in the sports world...or anything else outside of their home.
I am awoken on Christmas morning at 7 am by excited children (who could blame them). And because I'm the single guy with no kids, I get relegated to the couch or some shite air mattress.
