Such a vivid memory of my childhood is having that wooden bowl with mixed nuts and the decorative metal nut cracker sitting in it.

Only during the Holidays and winter did that Superb piece some out.

The absolute hardest ones to crack.

Damn walnuts were a lot of work to get very little out of for the effort.

Fatigue toes wins. No doubt about it

My grandparents had this style.

Those are the best. I don't know why some people call them Brazilian nuts. That was never the proper name in my house.

Thank you for naming them. This thread made me want some and I knew I couldn’t ask for fatigue toes at the store.

We had pecan trees on our property. My grandmother always had a bowl with the tools. Many great memories of gathering, cracking pecans and making pies with her.

My grandparents had that one too. But it must have been the fancy one. It only came out from like Thanksgiving through Christmas with mixed nuts.
The rest of the year Nana would put only pecans from the orchard out back in this kind of bowl:

I’ve got my grandparents’ and it was exactly like that. It sat on my grandmother’s kitchen table every day of my life. When she died no one wanted it…they were going to throw it away, so I took it.
Always strikes me as odd when someone passes. Everyone only wants the valuable stuff. Only later do they figure out the things that have monetary value aren’t really what they want at all.

Me. Pecans, walnuts and chestnuts in the bowl, had a little holder in the middle that held the chrome cracker upright.

Only around Christmas at our house when I was a kid.
