Subtle “I live alone” brag.

That’s what I pay for a week I have to also buy a set of diapers.

I’d go out way less too if I never got drinks, apps, dessert. What’s the point?

Yeah, I don't go out as a means to fuel my body for survival. I have plenty of food at home that can do that even if I don't feel like cooking. I go out for the social aspect.

Eh. I wouldn't say we hit $300 before tax all that often, but not hard to hit 200-250. We did it just last night with only this (pictured below), one app not pictured, 1 glass of house wine, and a cocktail.

I’m not necessarily saying it’s hard as much as I’m saying it’s not a normal night out to eat for most people. Though if you’re doing a table full of assorted nigiri on a nightly basis, we would likely get along

I eat out a lot. And I mean a lot.

Unless you live in Manhattan, $150/head is very, very expensive for what you described.

Right

App: $15
2-3 drinks: $45
Entrees: $100
Dessert: $15

Even with these relatively high estimates you're only looking at around $230 including tax and tip. I guess you could be eating at a steakhouse every time you dine out, but $50/entree is a pretty generous amount for a non-steakhouse entree.

ETA: don't get me wrong, I've had bills higher than that, but we also had more than 2-3 drinks total

We love it. Come on anytime!

I do get the point of OP, though. It is just as easy to get below $200 as it is to get above $200. All you have to do is barely try.

At our regular seafood spot we'll be at tomorrow, we can get out for $80 just as easily as we can get out for $250. Really it depends on how bougie I'm being with my wine choices and how heavy of items we select. You can get something rich served with bread for $25 to share and be full.. or you can go hard on chilled seafood (shrimp cocktail, raw oysters from other coasts, etc.) that shoot you way up in price.

Not really, check out a menu of anything new and trendy in Austin and it’s
$20-25 per app
$35-55 per dinner
Drinks $15(avg guess)
Dessert $15
So Average 150 pre tax $170 after
Tip $30
Total =$200 around that if you get the low end prices items and $250 if you are on the higher end.

Pretty easy to do

I’ve burned nearly $750 on a dinner for two, but that was at Michelin starred restaurants serving over a dozen courses and wine pairings. That context is what’s making the $300 hum drum weeknight dinner for two so mind boggling to me

While I won’t begrudge someone a bottle of wine, seafood towers definitely run afoul of what I would consider a reasonable dining experience. Hell, I put them in roughly the same category of wasteful extravagance that I do champagne bottle service at clubs

To get a meal over $200 someone is enjoying a lot of alcohol. 2 people can eat at Commanders for less than that if you don’t drink.

Ah.

Yeah, we are drinkers. A bottle is nothing, TBH.

Ok, sure, but now we’re stretching. Your OP started with that you couldn’t make it out the door for less than $250-$300. Now we’re down to $200-$250. In the context of what you’re ordering, and exclusively at trendy restaurants, I won’t argue with that.

With that said, my man, do y’all really need an app, two entrees, and a dessert? My wife and I will routinely do one app and one entree if we want a full dessert, two apps and one entree if not. I think we might die if we tried to routinely eat that much

I cut back from twice a week to twice a month. Also cut back on going to breweries and doing other things.

That being said, you're amounts are incredibly off. I eat out in San Diego when I fly out there for work, and I have to try relatively hard to get tickets over a hundred.

If we know we’re are going to put down two bottles, we’ll normally bring something nice from home and eat the corking fee. Paying the restaurant markup on run of the mill bottles of wine hurts my feelings. At least with cocktails it’s something I probably wouldn’t/couldn’t make at home

I’m not eating at big chains but it also isn’t like the most luxurious restaurants that I frequent.

To go orders are where it's at.... save money on tip, drinks, etc and can eat in front of the TV watching something good.

Oh GOD, you're telling me! I know the prices of my favorite bottles at places we frequent around town, and on principle I won't drink them if they're a % higher than I know I can get elsewhere.

It's wild how something like Turnbull can range from $70/bottle to $120/bottle in BR restaurants.

(I have a nice spot I go to often enough that they give me the wholesale price which is less than the grocery store, but that one's a secret )
