My wife and I are the same way. It's a once a year thing for us to go out for a nice dinner. One place we go to often is lil pizza place for their happy hour specials. Pizza and beer are half off. We can have a couple of beers, two neapolitan pizzas, and an app for under $40.

My problem with these types of places is that they are basically all the same, in every city. Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Birmingham, Nashville... they're the same. And because they're all the same, nothing is ever truly exceptional. I don't mind spending a lot at a restaurant, but I want it to be unique.

I'm talking about the places that have one of the following things:

1. EXTENSIVE craft beer selection but a shite-tier wine list
2. Places that have at least one traditional American dish with a twist
3. Brunch
4. Vintage style light bulbs
5. An unexciting fusion dish usually involving nachos or tacos

I get these places were unique and exciting 20 years ago, but good lord, it's getting harder to find a legit place now

We don't dine-in at restaurants all that often anymore, maybe once every 2 months. We do get takeout from restaurants more often, but most of the time we split an entree.

Wife and I rarely eat out anymore either.

Maybe it’s just me but I have no desire to go spend 2-300 bucks at a nice steakhouse. I like to cook at home, and although it may not be as good, it’s cheaper and more relaxing. Plus I don’t have to get a $20 glass of bourbon when I have a full bottle at home that I paid $60 for.

I mean you almost can’t go anywhere these days above a half decent place if you order ann app(1) a 2-3 drinks(total), dinner(2) and a desert(1) for less than the above mentioned.

First, if your SO is a foodie then she’d know you can get damn good food cheap if you know where to look. The Thai place near me we might spend $15 a dish and it’s phenomenally good.

But just to entertain your though, we went to Chef Lee’s NAMI Steakhouse which has received several nods nationally for being a quality restaurant since opening and he himself is a James Beard finalist and has won multiple JB’s for his cookbooks. We had an app (Dukbokki Rice Cakes - $9), two entrees (Korean BBQ Kalbi (Short Ribs) - $42, Ju-Mul-Luk (Beef Tenderloin) - $45), and shared a dessert (Mango and Lychee Mochi - $11). Neither one of us had cocktails but they were $7-$8 a piece. With tip it was under $150. And we go somewhere like that MAYBE once a month.

Some of y’all need to reign it in a bit.

I don't speak on this much, but every time I go out to eat I look around and see this and it genuinely keeps me from doing so more often. You look around and it disgusts you that you are on some similar path with these people even if just for that one night.

On a side note in regards to the original post, I think people that enjoy cooking don't enjoy going out to eat as much because we look at the food (that costs 3-4x what it would have cost us to cook) and understand in most cases we could have cooked the same meal better and for a fraction of the cost. I don't mind paying the price for some really good food that I can't make myself, but this is not usually the case.

I won’t say we can’t stand it, but I will say we don’t do it as often as we used to. Most of the reason is just because of living a healthier lifestyle but you’re exactly right about the costs. Where we live for the most part service is horrendous so we’re more inclined to opt For some sort of counter service or food truck option.

TBH I just substituted going out to eat for making a similar meal I would usually get at a restaurant and just making it at home.

It's the wait for me. When the wife picks a place, she never does her homework(make a reservation/look at the menu). So when we get there she is surprised at the long wait. And then can't decide what she wants. All she knows is someone at work said it was good. For example we went to some place called the Rustic. Long arse wait time because she didn't know they took reservations. And the food, atmosphere sucked.

Who wants to wait almost an hour for bad food?

This is one of the great things about being a single guy in his 30's with good income.

I eat out almost every meal and tip generously.

The drinks are what drives $$$
up the checks...

Got me a little local diner where I have breakfast and all the old lady servers know me and I put a "Miss" on their name to show respect

As I type this I am realizing I should rethink these spending habit

How much money are you making, though? I'm a single dude and pick up food often, but I can't be tipping generously at the prices they're now charging. Mexican restaurants are by far the cheapest, but even the "cheap" Mexican restaurant by me upped their prices.

The prices of the Japanese place by me went up too.

It's possible to eat out a lot and be fine financially, but usually those of us who do don't have kids, at least, and it's not like I'm going to the most expensive restaurants in town, either (or often ordering expensive things off of the menu).

When you think this are you eating at a chain restaurant? I don't feel like I notice that at all, but I also don't eat at sit down chain restaurants.
