My grandfather who fought in the Pacific was a very quiet and sweet man. But god damn he absolutely hated the Japanese.
I have heard that most Pacific Vets of WWII felt that way.. The best I heard was: "The bastards took 5 years of my life."
But lets not forget the Russians had their fair share of Brutality too. Had they not ending up getting their asses kicked in 41 and 42 there may have been more than just the Katyn Massacre.

The rape of Nanking.

Equally brutal. The Germans tried to hide their worst brutality. The Japanese were outwardly bold with theirs. Both got what they deserved.

Japs by a mile, easier to be mad at hitler et al, than the Japanese, that’s racist

Depends. If you were an Allied POW, Germans weren't that bad, but if you were Jewish, Slav, Gypsy, or part of their liquidation plans then they represented absolute death. The Japanese were not as specific or ideological but, across the board, they were far more brutal.

Japs and it’s not close. Germany overshadows Japan because they’re from Europe and who they committed atrocities against and who writes the history books. No one really cared about Japan because they’re from far away east Asia and killed Chinese people who we didn’t care about.
Not to mention the fact that communist China almost immediately became our enemy in Korea and we knew we were about to need Japan as an ally bigly.
It was against our interest to do anything but ignore how brutal the Japanese were.

Truman made the right decision to drop the bombs. An invasion of the home Japanese islands would have resulted in millions of dead Japanese and hundreds of thousands of Marine casualties. Even after the second bomb, many of the Japanese high command wanted to fight to the death and tried to assassinate the group that agreed to surrender to McArthur.
I’m not against dropping the a bombs and the Japanese had it coming due to not just Pearl Harbor but all of the chaos they brought upon SE Asia but I watched a documentary recently on YouTube that gave me pause and made me think about it a bit more and what I knew vs thought I did.
I’ll try to find it but basically it made this really detailed arguement that an invasion of the home islands was never really on the table anyways. I can’t remember the rationale but I think was something to the effect of getting the Japanese to surrender and save face and that the US needed to let them know that the emperor could stay on without publicly doing so. And the biggest / most urgent thing was getting it all done before the Russians entered into the fight. I’ll see if I can find it, it was a really good documentary.

This shouldn’t even be a question

The Japanese were know to dismember US soldiers that were killed and/or captured. They would cut off their penises and put them in the mouths of their dead victims as a warning to other enemy soldiers.

It’s the japs and it’s not close. They would even cannibalize their enemies. Not to mention the rape of China.
The everyday Germans were actually more like Americans than any of our allies. There are accounts from soldiers that the English didn’t like us, then going through France couldn’t relate , but then when arriving in Germany found people very similar to us. (Ambitious, self reliant, hard working and proud) . Then upon meeting the Russians found out they were uncivilized as anyone and led many to think we fought on the wrong side or should continue to fight the commies.

The Germans were more efficient (cause they are Germans) in their brutality.
The Japanese seemed to enjoy torture and making people (especially the Chinese) suffer. The rape of nanjing is a good example.

My dad was a POW in a Nazi camp…. Stalag 7A in Moosburg, Germany. He had been captured by the Nazis near Florence, Italy. There were thousands of Allied prisoners being held there when they were liberated. He weighed about 95 lbs when he was liberated and then sent to London for rest, recovery, and nourishment. He did not talk about his experiences of fighting in Italy or being held POW until right before he died. He managed to live a good life after the war but suffered from PTSD and depression until his death.

I’d figure we would relate more towards the English than anybody, especially during the Third Reich era. I’ve read about frictions between the Americans and English (some, not a ton) but I think that probably had more to do with fighting side by side than anything. And the Americans (especially right after the US first entered the war) could seem a bit too gung ho to "see some action" whereas the Brits had already been fighting it for some time.

Reminds me of a story of my grandfather, was in the hospital and an Asian nurse came in and he absolutely lost his shite. He survived the Bataan death march and always hated the Japanese
