It works especially well at night if you don't want to turn on the light and further wake yourself up.
ETA, I have been a front pocket wallet guy for as long as I can remember, but I live in Chicago and ride public transit all the time, so that's just smart (or I put it in a zipped jacket pocket.) It's a leather Coach wallet.

I carry keys wallet and phone. I need 3 pockets. How are you avoiding using a back pocket and still carrying all 3 items?

I don't do wallets anymore. Switched to a briefcase for a while, but it was hurting my arm carrying it everywhere, so I just got a large leather purse. It's kinda rustic and doesn't look gay at all. Sometimes I'll do a smaller cross-body bag if I'm going out.

After I switched to a front pocket wallet I'll never go back. I hardly ever carry cash now anyway, all I need is a few cards and my ID. I now never have to be uncomfortable sitting on my wallet and there's way less of a chance of me forgetting my wallet in my pocket and sending it through the wash.

I do because I hate having a fat wallet in my back pocket.
I use the Nomadic minimalist wallet:
That little tab slides out so you have easier access to cards. Can hold quite a bit of cards.

I’ve kept my wallet in my front pocket almost as long as i’ve Had one. Better for your back and accessibility.
