Should I be looking at the Citi Bank Double Cash card or something else?
If you can get approved and pay the full balance each month, Citi's Double Cash card is definitely the best with no annual fee. It's a great everyday use card.
You'll have to do some calculations on how much you spend on gas, groceries, dining out, travel, etc. to see if other cards with annual fees will yield more cash back.

I think that's an absolute terrible approach but you do you.
My parents taught me to live that way, I didn’t realize how monumentally stupid it was til I moved out and couldn’t rent an apartment without a co-signer , get any kind of loan without a co-signer, and my credit was absolute shite because I had no history of credit.
Luckily my brother stepped up on the apartment and I got a few cards to build credit after that. Took out a small loan for a car with no interest to build as well.
Getting free money/trips/miles from rewards is great if you aren’t terrible with money and overspend.

The Military types on here need to justify NOT having the Amex Platinum. $200/year in uber credits, $200/year in airline expenditures, free entry to Delta Sky Club and Amex Centurion Lounge(by far the nicest airport lounge I've stumbled into), plus points. Just submit the required info to Amex to get the SCRA benefits... meaning an Annual Fee waiver.
If you're military that goes TDY a lot(or just travels a lot) and you don't have this card, you're losing out.

Pay everything possible cash.

Chase sapphire reserve is the best. It’s $450 per year

That time it made perfect sense for me but now I just use my debit for everything.
I guess I'm just not understanding how it doesn't make sense now.
If you have to buy shite anyway, which you do to live, why wouldn't you want to earn rewards while buying it?

Why on earth would you use a debit card when you can use your credit card and just pay it off at the end of the month? We will earn enough cash back rewards for Christmas shopping
Exactly. I told my parents this but they declined... their transmission went out in my moms Yukon... over $3000 when it’s all said and done... could’ve used a chase sapphire ( which they would’ve qualified for) and gotten the $600 bonus for hitting their spending bonus with ONE purchase
It’s dumb to not utilize the tools out there if you’re gonna spend the money anyway

Same. My dad always told me not to get a credit card. Luckily, I am constantly reading the internet and stumbled upon /r/PersonalFinance when I was like 21 and got a credit card.
My friend was raised this way as well. She is 35 years old and just had to have her parents co-sign on the purchase of her first home and also her car.

Dude, I just recently got a Hilton card. I made like 3 work trips (2 nights each trip) and a 4 week period and I already have enough for a free night. They add up quick when using a Hilton card paying for Hilton purchases.
Your doing something wrong if you didn't get 75 or 100K in points as a bonus for signing up.
And yes, I can't believe people still don't know about or don't care to take advantage of travel rewards. Some of the cards offer great bonuses and even a free bonus night once a year.
One little example is I had gotten one of the Hilton cards several years back and put most of my house renovation charges on it. Six months later I was upgraded to Hilton diamond and I took the family to stay the Sandestin Hilton resort for four nights for free. Those rooms were running $400 a night at that time.

Obviously work related stuff goes on a credit card. See my edit.
You could still use a credit card for personal items though. If you are actually checking your bank balance for EVERY purchase, why not just take an extra 15 seconds to check your credit card balance? Better fraud protection and rewards for using a credit card, like other posters have said.

$95
But its the Blue Cash Preferred that has those cash back levels. The regular Blue Cash is only 3% groceries, 2% gas and 1% everywhere else but no annual fee

The discover card with no annual fee...1% cash back on everything and random quarterly 5% cash back , this quarter is food which I crush ....
They match your first year cash back you earn 100%... so you could easily get $4-500 back after the first year and is a good free credit card to keep in your wallet

Correct. Neglected the Preferred part.
You'd really only need to spend about $1600 annually on groceries to cover the annual fee, then everything else would be gravy. I hit that in just 2 months most likely.

I also use Costco/amazon cards. I learned recently that the Costco card has some other benefits including price protection for a few months after purchases. There are services (sifty and others) that will monitor your email for purchases, let you know if the price drops and automatically make a claim for the difference. So far, I’ve gotten about $40 back on random purchases.

I farm about 5k a month in points through work.
Not a bad gig considering costco.
Next card will likely be Amex gold.
Just need another few months to pump my score from 717 back to high 7s.

Fidelity 2% cashback on all purchases no annual fee

I have a capital one journey since I went back to school. No annual fees and 1.5% back on everything. It works and is free money. Works great for paying school expenses.

If you have a lot of money at Bank of America and Merrill lynch, definitely the boa premier card with platinum bonus gets you the most cash back.
