The Suez Crisis was the final nail in the Empire. That was the moment the English realized the Empire was dead.
The empire lives on (in the Falkland Islands)!

Idk, when did women get the right to vote and hold political office in Britain?
1918 for chicks over 30, 1928 was 21 and up.
But, it was always going to fall apart. The "caste" system crippled it and created class divisions (London vs the Northern working class.) If you read "The Psychology of Military Incompetence,") most of the examples of failures are British. It reveals a corrosive attitude among the English ruling class.

WW1 was the primer, but what really ended them was WW2. the Japanese running roughshod over so many European colonies broke the illusion of de facto white / European supremacy and hegemony.

Montgomery planned his Rhine crossing for two months. Had to have overwhelming numerical superiority and everything had to be just right. Great if you are fighting in the trenches, not great if you are fighting mobile warfare.
Patton crosses in one night and steams ahead while Monty sat and planned away. Monty wanted Patton fired.
Churchill had to straighten Monty out. In his memoirs, Churchill realized the concept of war had changed and Montgomery had failed to change with it. Never looked at Montgomery the same way after that.

WW2 hurt them bad. Joining the EU with the immigration that came with it is finishing them off.

The US was always fated to take over their spot. When it happend was coincidence.

We were the only serious naval power in the aftermath of WWII who could be as effective if not more than the Royal Navy

WW2—The empire fell when the Brits let India have self rule in 1947

Yep, the final nail was Patton dragging his nuts over Montgomery going into Germany.

They became powerful via other people's productivity.
The British? No sir! British power in the 19th century was based on British productivity which, due to the industrial revolution, was by far the highest in the world. Napoleon tirelessly tried to force all of Europe into his “Continental System”, which was an economic zone that excluded British trade. He couldn’t do it because British goods were so superior, and so much less expensive, than any others, it created too much financial incentive to cheat and risk Napoleon’s wrath.
Further, in 1805 the British declared war on the slave trade. They committed real resources and treasure to stopping it.

They lost @ 1 million men WWI and another 500k during WWII.
That culled the herd of a lot of alpha men. Now the pussy gene has gotten stronger over there with the communist, pacifist, idle rich, and academia, who didn’t fight, diluting the gene pool.
Add the debt and no more British Empire.
Americans are brawlers, adventurers, and risk/reward takers who continue to use natural selection along with ambition to succeed.
USA! USA!

Follow up question, when we should yall say Britain was at the height of it's power?
Posted on 2/25/26 at 1:25 pm to prplhze2000
Suez.
Their invasion was strongly opposed by the US, the Soviets, and others so they backed off. When they did, the world saw that as a weakness in their imperialist abilities.
The weakening was further exacerbated by India's independence.
Plus they were being pulled down by their enormous WW2 debt.

Post WWI.
They were still raping the far east, Africa. The royal family were heads of state, governors, and monarchs across the globe, all connected by the Merchant Navy.

Neither.
Extreme political correctness among both politicians and members of the royals. And allowing unchecked immigration.

That's one reason they saw Germany as a threat. It was the first country on the continent to truly industrialize.

quote:Yes the EU’s lax immigration policies were certainly a problem but Brexit made the immigration issue way worse. In the EU they had Poles and Romanians, now that cheap labor has been replaced by 3rd worlders (never mind that Poland is beginning to surpass the UK in quality of life metrics anyway). The level of immigration also rocketed up post-Brexit under Tory leadership. So people who thought they were voting for less immigrants wound up in a much worse situation.
Joining the EU with the immigration that came with it is finishing them off.

And Bismarck united the German Republics, conquered Austria and then beat the French. The constant British fear was a conquered Europe closed to their trade. They could not tolerate that and understandably so.
