I'd pick San Antonio over all of those (I lived in DFW for 5 years)

definitely a big drawback but the OP limited me to only Texas so we have to work with what we have.

Austin, Dallas, and Houston in that order.

Crime is lower compared to Houston, not sure about Austin.

Less than 40 murders a year for a city population of 1 million. It is a nice change coming from New Orleans.

That is probably in the ghetto parts of town that most of us would not even frequent, ever.

*Are there ghetto parts of town in Austin? lol

Dallas/FW - Sure, it's striver central but it's a decently run city with everything you could want, weather doesn't suck as much as Houston and there are plenty of places to live where you likely won't get shot

Houston - It's ok. I'd only move to Houston for great job opps. Of course, great economic opportunity is kind of Houston's thing.

Austin is too popular/expensive/weird for me.

San Antonio lacks business opportunity the others have.

Livable cities on the rise in the South/Texas - Dallas, Houston, Nashville, Atlanta, Charlotte. That's probably the extent of what I'd consider these days.

What he said.

The bad part of town is not nearly the same level of fear you would feel in a bad part of New Orleans. Not close.

Yeah... I don't think people realize that New Orleans has some of the worst places to live in the country.

I wouldn't downplay the ghettos of any city in Texas though.
