Big Bend is the best place I've ever seen for this. Just one state over from Louisiana.

I have studied this long and hard, therefore I am headed to the Big Bend area in TX later this month. I have NEVER seen more stars than I did when I was there last. Amazing

The astronomy club used to drive out to that campground near Clinton that the Boy Scouts use...can't remember the name but it was a good dark sky site. Light pollution in BR is bad.
Edit: Camp Avondale was the place. Winter sky is the best. Orion Nebula is easy to spot and Saturn and Jupiter are up. No skeeters.
The Highland Road Observatory spot is good but isn't as dark as it was 20 years ago when it first opened. That orange glow is slowly creeping in.

That Observatory on Highland Rd. Went there one night with my gf and I was surprised at how much we could see with just the eye alone. Also, it's pretty empty there and there is a lot of outdoor space 
Leaving the city and refinery areas would be best though. If you want to stay close, that spot is pretty darn good.

It gets so dark at the camp that you can't see your hand in front of your face. Have seen some amazing meteor showers out there.

Yeah last time I saw the sky decently clear was about 20 miles outside of Jonesboro in the middle of nowhere.
Even in LA, the light pollution is hard to escape.
