Yes, Vegas has lots of fun things to do...But when the night kicks in at the Vegas casinos they're all just alike, one big smelly nasty haze of cigarette smoke.
Some of the casinos have top notch ventilation systems. You can be in the casino and not get overwhelmed by the smoke, but if I go to one in Baton Rouge, I can't stay in there for too long.. And its not something you can get used to either unless you drink to the point you don't notice it anymore.

There are people gambling there who look like they may not have enough money to buy food and/or medicine.
The sad thing is, its all of those people who probably keeps them in business. You ever been into a truck stop video poker casino? Some guy I know worked security at one for awhile (he is a policeman). He said the night shifts were depressing because there would be people who would be ashamed of playing, go play late at night.. On Fridays he said there would be people who would go in and lose their weekly paycheck in 30mins. And most of the time, if people "won", that just meant they were able to play longer because they would play until they had nothing..
Casinos are good for the people who own them and they do provide jobs, but just because it can be provided doesn't mean it should be. I have to imagine that in Baton Rouge, these places depend on the people who go lose it all. Its not like Vegas where people come in from all over the world all year long. The casinos that are on the strip, they have constant foot traffic. Even on Freemont street its constant, but if you would go into one of the casinos in BR right now, it is probably a depressing scene.

What about the one in Marksville? Before I ever went there I heard people talk about how good it was... I even heard someone say "Some of them casinos in Vegas have live tigers in them and the one in Marksville is like one in Vegas because they have live alligators and a movie theatre". When I finally went, we were staying overnight and I knew the second I got into the room that my expectations were set too high. This was about two years ago and they still had old tune TVs in the room, the trash cans in the room were full.. I didn't expect it to be the Bellagio or anything, but I wasn't expecting a Motel 8 with live alligators and a casino either.

The worst was when the Belle of BR was forced to sail and I'd go in there, hand them my money, lose and was stuck on that damn riverboat for 1.5 more hours

I don't know how many people out there are not drug users because they have a gambling problem.. In other words, I don't think you would talk to any of these people and they would say "you know what? if I couldn't gamble here I would be smoking crack" they are already both or they not, but you are probably right, if they can't manage their money they will waste it on something, but I am just saying you can make an argument that just because they are going to lose their money on something, that doesn't mean you should open up a casino so they could lose it there.

OTB isn't that bad. The fajitas are decent.

They might not say they would start shooting heroin, but they are more than likely losers by destiny. Why should the positive economic impact for the employees and enjoyment by responsible patrons be sacrificed for some losers who weren't going to do anything productive with their money regardless?

Someone must have had a bad trip to the Boat.... try winning money, it'll change your attitude

The homeless people in Vegas shouldn't have been surprising, but I wasn't prepared to see that many people living on the streets.

Exactly. I go to the casino at least a dozen times a year. I go with $100 and look at it like an arcade. I go with the intention of losing it. Hell I probably make up at least half that on comped/cheap drinks.
Hell I even go to the truckstop casino when I go visit the family back home for the holidays and whatnot. Play the nickel poker and drink a full glass of Glenlivet 12 Year for a buck.
Just because degenerates can't handle themselves, doesn't mean that those of us who can should be denied by the nanny state. I can spend 2 hours looking at the dregs of society blowing all of their money and still sleep tight at night.

I am just playing devil's advocate, I am not saying they should close all casinos immediately. There are people who will just automatically fall into certain categories so there will always be the uneducated, people who just make bad decisions all the time, fricks ups so they might as well create jobs around the constant.. But I can see how people would question if it is better to have casinos than not.

You don't have to gamble to have fun and enjoy the scenery in Vegas. In BR it's just a bunch of old people and degenerates.
I agree with that. I plan to have a good time in Vegas one day. And to a degree, La Berg is alot of fun on a Saturday night after an LSU game for example.
