A Lot of them are former teachers in Louisiana so they prolly hoarded that sort of loot on their way out.

They're not poor. My Nextdoor App group launched an all out war against one guy in our area because a local bank teller posted a pic of him depositing $3200 cash into a checking & savings account. He disappeared for a while but sure enough he was back out there last week and the local vigilantes ran him off again.

There is/was a white male that looked to be about 50-ish that has worked the Government & Foster intersection for years. He had a neatly trimmed goatee and always wore clean clothes including bright white socks. I've never given him a penny, but he made enough to work that area for years without needing a job. I don't travel that part of town much so I don't know if he's still there.

It's not.
Still a good thing to do. A lot of these guys make decent money.
There is a guy on Franklin at 610 there every day begging I used to give to him before I saw his phone and car were nicer than mine.

I give people the benefit of the doubt that they may be in need.

But I’m also not a prick.

I posted this in a thread a few weeks back, but they are definitely organized. I think my thoughts then apply to your post.

You should look into panhandling culture. There are pretty strict rules when it comes to begging locations and who gets what street corners, etc. I have several local cop friends that encounter bums on a daily basis and this is what I've learned:

1) Generally speaking, bums get together and divide up areas of the city. They use alliances and friendships to get the most desired locations. "Seniority" even plays a role, as local bums that have been there longer will push out those who just showed up.

2) When locations are disputed and consensus cannot be reached panhandlers often develop a schedule where, say, Bum A will work the corner from 8-10 AM, then pass it off to Bum B who gets it from 10-noon and so on.

3) Violence often resorts between panhandlers when they don't want to reach an agreement over certain locations and, like in prison, the toughest (or craziest) bum wins out.

4) Women and dogs and children greatly enhance the amount of money collected and panhandlers often "rent" them or use them in a sort of profit sharing scheme while working the streets. For example, a women will "sell" her services by standing alongside the panhandler with her kids. Her take will generally be half the money collected.

5) Bums don't mess with other bums when they sleep. Even getting near another bum's space bubble while he's sleeping is a fairly big social misstep and you can be kicked out of the community if you're not trusted.

I find the subculture fascinating, even if bums/panhandlers disgust me.

I'm convinced these guys are organized. They meet and discuss what's works and doesn't.

r/vagabond

That particular sub is mainly trainhoppers, hitchhikers, and travelers.

Lots of interesting shite tbh.

I don't know if there are r/panhandlers or r/methheads subs.

I don't have the slightest inclination for being a vagabond or anything resembling that kind of lifestyle, but that is a very interesting website.
