He is 5 and still not in a booster? Your wife is crazy isn’t she? 4 and 40” is the rule. Don’t go backless booster until he is taller.

When my kids were younger, I was talking about my kids in car seats. Mom chimes in bragging about her kid's cars seats holding up to 90lbs. I told her, if your kid is 90lbs and still needs a car seat, you've got other issues..

Why see what the Academy of American Pediatricians recommends, when you can ask the Academy of OT Ballers?

40" and 40 lbs is the threshold between a booster and a 5 point. Good thing about a 5 point is your kid can do it himself, it takes a while for them to learn how to use the new belts.
You don't have to switch immediately. We kept mine in a car seat until 46 and 44 inches. They're 4. Still not sure it was the best move but the booster gives then a ton more leg room.

Then maybe Tigerdroppings isn't the place for you to find this answer.

Bout 3.50 years, or 3.50 feet. Whichever comes first.

My daughter is 6 (will be 7 in July) and about 50 lbs and she is still in a forward facing full 5 point harness car seat. She's close to outgrowing it, but it's still the safest option for now. No point in rushing into a booster seat, their safety should always come first.

Most carseats will go to 65lbs or 48" now. So I would keep them in the carseat until you hit one of those limits if you are concerned about safety.

The days of "booster seats" at 4-5 years old are over, and for good reason
Nah. My four year old is in a booster with the back on as are many of her friends. She is well within the height and weight for it. Seat belt fits naturally across the shoulders/chest.

Most of them say the 5 point harness isn't used once a kid hits 40 lbs. Then you can use the seat-belt across the car seat, or get a booster. Most boosters have a belt accessory attached to keep the belt across their chest and not their neck. My son is about to be 7 so he sits in on a booster with the seat-belt accessory. When we go on trips we'll put a car seat in, attach it with the clamps, and use the seat-belt notch. We do this so when we falls asleep he can rest his head on the sides instead of falling over.

Mine went to booster seats with a back at age 4. The backless booster once the seatbelt drops below the neck which was about 6yo.
I have several friends and coworkers who get all holy about the safety stuff bragging about little Braxxton sitting rearfacing until he turns 6yo. Ef dat! If you're that safety conscious, put a helmet on the little shite

I'm going to have to learn a bunch of shite about this sort of stuff.
I was 5 in 1990, not exactly the dark ages, and I don't recall using any sort of booster/car seat at all.
Times keep on changing.

we move kids out of their full car seat into a booster when the shoulders are even with the highest level of the shoulder straps in the full car seat.
