My oldest is 5 years and some change, 3’-8”, 46 pounds
Is it time for a booster? Backless or full back ?
I appreciate all the responses.

Here are the Academy of American Pediatrician's (the governing body that researches and publishes clinical guidelines for all pediatricians) Recs:
So basically, check the forward facing seat manufacturer's recs for what upper limit of weight is supported. If she is under that, keep her in it until she grows out of it and then use the booster.
quote:
All children who have outgrown the rear-facing weight or height limit for their car safety seat should use a forward-facing car safety seat with a harness for as long as possible, up to the highest weight or height allowed by the seat's manufacturer.
All children whose weight or height is above the forward-facing limit for their car safety seat should use a belt-positioning booster seat until the vehicle lap and shoulder seat belt fits properly, typically when they have reached 4 feet 9 inches in height and are between 8 and 12 years of age.

When he's tall enough that the seat belt can go over his chest instead of decapitating him

My youngest is 5. He is still in a harness full car seat. We were rear ended last month and I felt really glad that we had him in that seat. We were discussing putting him in a booster recently. He is still within the weight and height limits for the car seat, so we will keep him in it for the time being.

Yes definitely time for a booster. Keep the back on though the head thing helps them sleep better.

40" and 40 lbs is the threshold between a booster and a 5 point. Good thing about a 5 point is your kid can do it himself, it takes a while for them to learn how to use the new belts.

Ejection seat for when they get too annoying.

My youngest girl went to a booster at 4.5, but she’s 4’ and 58 pounds.

What do the legal height, weight, and age requirements state as minimums for booster seats? If he/she meets all the minimums, switch

Better hope Chris Hansen isn’t reading this thread.

No, that's backwards. The safest path is to leave them in the forward facing car seat until they reach the maximum height/weights.....as others above mentioned.
The days of "booster seats" at 4-5 years old are over, and for good reason .

Yep. OP needs to identify which model carseat the child is currently using, but it is safest to leave them rear-facing and then forward-facing as long as possible (within height & weight specs) before switching to a booster.
