Time. I realized when I was 42 years old and sold a pretty succesful small business that I was never going to be frick you rich and I had a limited number of years to enjoy life. I fricked around 5 years ago and found myself in a job working about 60 hours week. I took nearly a $200K a year cut in pay to get back to the SE and work 4-10s guaranteed. I ain't making near what I once did but I am infinitely more satisfied.
I would not work anywhere long though where my time off was limited by anything other than workload and schedule. frick that. I ain't no lint head mill hand...

While neither scenario looks great, there's too many unknowns to answer. For ex. does either job offer more advancement opportunities? Could your schedule in scenario A lighten up at some point? Could your income in scenario B get significantly better while maintaining the easy schedule? Does wife work? How late are late nights? Are weekends normal work days or off at noon?

I worked an A type job for B type money out of college with an engineering degree. But not married for most of it and no kids. Great exposure to experience and woth my degree got me into advanced positions quickly. Now I work way less than either option and am "happy" with income (always want more, haha). However, I do still have random late nights such as having to work this weekend. But in the grand scheme, I have so much freedom, it's a blip on my radar. Could not start that process at this age without missing a ton. Glad I did it when I did.

I guess most younger men will say the money, but when you get older and look back, you always wish you would’ve spent more time with your kids

C) Right in between Options A and B.

You have young kids and a wife — which scenario would you rather?
A) $110k-$120k a year with 3 weeks of PTO but working almost every weekend and two late nights a week
B) $75k a year with potential $25k-$30k annual bonuses and 2 weeks of PTO but off every weekend and night
Is my wife working?
My current scenario is I make $72k + ~$5k in side income. I'm home by 3:30pm every day. I get every weekend off. A week at Thanksgiving. Two weeks at Christmas. A week at spring break. 2 months for summer. And multiple 3 day weekends throughout the year.
I'm a teacher.
In my scenario, my wife HAS to work. She makes $73k/year as a teacher and gets the same PTO.
If I could change our situation, I would in a heartbeat. I wish my wife could have stayed home while our kids were little. I wish my wife had more time to take care of the house, take care of herself, and have more mental/emotional energy for our family. She doesn't handle working very well, and we're swamped with responsibilities and fatigue every night.
Our time off is great, but it's always a reminder that our life could be different.
When my wife has stayed home for maternity leave, I enjoyed going to work and coming home to the family. If I could have that situation, but I had to work more for $140k, I would.

If I'm working almost every weekend it better be 300 plus a year to even consider it. But I'm mid career...in my twenties I might consider something like that

B and it isn’t a tough choice. I stepped away from the road warrior sales career (20+ years of 200 hotel nights annually) to take a full time WFH job 18 months ago. Was tired of missing my now 12 year old son grow up and the work/life balance wasn’t balanced.

I sell cars so Im used to "A". 75k a year is poverty level these days. Sad but true

Time. Easily.
I can buy less stuff and have more time to enjoy it.

Time and time again my friend.

You would actually make more money for your time at the $75K job.
75K for 2080 hours worked = 36 per hour (plus bonus)
115K for ~3120 hours worked (8 hours a day with some 10hr days) = 36 per hour.
IM taking the $75K job all day... time with the kids is worth more than money.

If you are working all that time and your wife has all the child care, you will be divorced within 5 years.

In my last job I had neither and now I have both. That’s much better than choosing.
Posted on 11/30/23 at 1:35 pm to TDsngumbo
no amount of money is worth time spent...
Posted on 11/30/23 at 1:36 pm to TDsngumbo
Option A is ridiculous. B isn't that great but make that money, gain more experience and leverage for the next jump.
Posted on 11/30/23 at 1:37 pm to TDsngumbo
Everyone makes $110K-$120K now so original scenario sucks.

I'm 24.
I value money more than time.
But I suspect my answer would change if I was 34.
And definitely would change if I was 44+.
