Same with SUVs. When I became a dad in 1997, traded in my sports car for an SUV. Always had to have raised white letters (RWLs) on the SUVs (Cherokee, 2 Xterras and a Pathfinder) and the cars always came from the dealer with raised white letter tires already on them off the lot. When I replaced tires, I always HAD to get new ones with RWLs. Just liked the look.
Kept a bottle of bleche white and a wire brush in the shed for special cleaning of them.
In 2021, got a new Explorer and it came with all-blacks. Can't say I really miss the whitewall cleaning.

Absolutley. I remember when we started doing black walls. No raised letters and no white. It honestly, was just odd at first.
I remember buying a marker at Kmart in high school to either enhance the white on the white letters or totally turn black letters white (no racist). It would wear off in about a month and you would have to do it again. Did it many times

I think dads finally got tired of kids not scrubbing very well with westleys.

Early to mid 90’s.
Whitewall was luxury. The. The push by baby boomers to drive trucks and SUV’s phased out the whitewall. It’s a generational shift in interests just like every generation.
By the 90’s, whitewall became the old geezer tire. No one young wants to associate with that.
It was cool when it was in style.

I'd say mid/late 70s. Had 1 set then the raised letters came in hot.

And spoked wheel covers
See them in East LA still.

Back when you were lucky to get 90k miles out of a vehicle

My Dad’s 55 Chevy Bel Aire 2 door sported the white walls. Scrubbed those clean often for him.

gets-------no scrubbing the fender wells to get off road dirt that accumulates, no deep cleaning of tires and rims, no wiping down the door jambs or the metal on the underside of the trunk and hood.
Single, childless man activities.

Don't miss getting on my knees and scrubbing away with a brillo pad

I remember scrubbing mine as a teen
LOL = I remember PAINTING them on - that was not a good idea. Could be I did it all wrong - but it looked awful and luckily it wore off pretty soon.

They looked great with my Cragar Mags on my 67 Camaro

Getting rid of whitewalls made the cost of inventory cheaper.

I always turned mine inside. Thought they looked stodgy.
