I've always heard your car should never cost more than 1/3 of your gross income (ex: if you make 60k, you shouldn't buy a car more than 20k).

Most conservative personal finance gurus suggest no more than 1/10 of your gross income. I'd imagine almost NOBODY follows either of those two rules nowadays

Exactly. My household income is almost $200k but paying $800 a month for a vehicle is just stupid and completely unjustifiable. I have four kids, a 401k, a money market and a house I'd rather invest my money in

I agree. Why take the hit when you can get something certified with low miles at half the price? I came to the conclusion last night that buying a new vehicle off the lot doesn't fit my financial strategy. O refuse to be one of those guys on Louisiana Sportsman begging for someone to take over notes on my $50,000 truck

Not when you can get 0 percent for 60 or 0.9 percent for 72 months

That someone would pay $52,500 for a 2014 truck. Have it for four years, then trade it in the minute it's paid off and finance another $40,000. There's absolutely nothing with a four year old truck.

It doesn't matter if you're making $20k or $200k a year- accepting an endless $800-$900 truck note is horrendous money management. Hey, it's his money and I don't begrudge him to do what he wants with it but I reserve the right to look and laugh. Same when I see people in the ghetto living in poverty but have $3,000 rims on their 2002 Dodge Neon.

ETA: Now i get it

Different strokes. I'm sure you spend money on something others find frivolous.

Lol. You are so set on arguing truck prices with someone that you are missing the point.

He bought it new in 2014 for $52k. He absolutely could get $25k for it when he's paid it off in 4 years (4x4 high trim diesels hold their value well enough or that), then use that $25k towards a new one. He thinks the new one will cost him $65k, leaving him $40k to finance.

Yes. I understand. He's buying a $65,000 truck. Ignoring the mind-blowing ignorance of that, he's still financing $40,000 of it after his trade in. I'm not discounting the fact that he could get $25,000 on the trade in, I'm saying it's retarded to perpetually be financing $40,000 every four years. There's nothing wrong with a four year old truck.

Yeah, I'm calling bullshite on this, especially when talking about trucks. That whole buy used at half the price went away in the 80's.

I spent a year looking for a good used truck with low miles a few years ago. The trucks just hold their value.

I ended up getting a new frontier because I will never ever in my life pay more than $30K for a vehicle.

If you have the money do what you want though.

It's retarded to you. Maybe he has a business where part of making money is having a good vehicle to drive people around in. Or maybe it's just what he enjoys. Do you do nothing with your money and never indulge in anything better than generics? I'm doubting it.

but most trucks now are also luxury vehicles.

No....no they aren't. They are just sold in that same price point. They seriously lack the amenities, quality, and service that true luxury vehicles and their dealerships provide. Although the interiors are quite nice, they are not luxury level.

Huh?

I bought loaded Lariat that stickered at $53k for $43.5k about a year ago.

$58k as the floor isn't right. Find another dealer.

I have a 2012 tundra and will drive it until the wheels fall off. I take care of it so I hope to have it for at least another decade or so. I'll never understand the need for getting new vehicles every few years. My buddy's company gives him 800 a month for a truck stipend but that's one of the few reasons I see a need to upgrade so often.

Trucks come with the same amenities luxury vehicles came with 5 years ago. Sure they lag a little behind, but compared to the utilitarianism of trucks 10 and 15 years ago, they compare very favorably to luxury vehicles.

Ah, there it is. No, bad financial decisions are not relative. Perpetually buying new $65k trucks every four years is bad money management and I think you realize this. You can spin it how you want to and talk about how you deserve it and you work hard for your money, blah, blah but it is what it is. Perhaps you're at a stage in your life where a showy, extravagant truck is worth the mismanagement and that's fine, too.

We all do things like this: eat out instead of brown-bagging, etc. But I'll be damned if I'm going to have an $800 truck note for the rest of my life. Hell, why not lease at that point?
