I have never heard this until like 5 yrs ago and now it seems to be becoming more prevalent.

Recognize kids: it’s “vs” with an S on the end!

It's never changed. Just been abbreviated.

Like et cetera

I’ve heard “verse” used a few times from color commentators.

I wondered at the time if they were just not very smart, or if they were trying to invent a word or catch phrase.

What's annoying is lawyers dropping the word all together and just saying the letter: "Roe vee Wade"

TV pundits sometimes say this b/c they think it makes them sound smart

I have no idea how that is possible unless you are making the distinction of seen versus heard, "verse" has been spreading across the oral language like a plague of locusts for several years now.

I went to law school ~35 years ago, and that usage was common then.

What I find more interesting in the legal world vis-a-vis case names is how some are cited in conversation by just one name and others almost always by both.

Brown v Board of Education
Marbury v Madison

Dred Scott
Miranda

I have commonly heard the "vee" in federal court for decades. And also heard it from Dr. Bolner at LSU in 1978 in reference to Supreme Court cases.

It's not.

Also, it's still specific, not pacific.

Did I claim this began recently?

I said it was annoying.
