Powerful people using the press to push narratives is as old as the press.
That being said, I feel like the last couple of decades they've gotten comfortable with being blatantly bias knowing there's no recourse for completely making things up.
Eta: also I think there used to be some pride in journalism but that seems all but gone. It's all about clicks and who can grab a big headline (even if it's complete bullshite)

Someone said 1996, maybe thinking of Bill Clinton. I'd point at that same basic time, but I'd point at the big tobacco lawsuits happening back then. There was way too much money in those cases for the media to be objective about them. So, they greased the metaphorical wheels to enable the big cash grab.
In fact, the propaganda campaign was *so* effective that I expect most people will find my answer ridiculous. But where are the huge health benefits? People aren't healthier than they were in 1996. Life expectancy is trending downward. And people are so indoctrinated that they know this, and yet by and large they think smoking tobacco is terrible and smoking pot is great.
That's really clown world in a nutshell to me. It's just so easy to openly lie to people now, and they don't even question it.

I doubt it was ever unbiased. It probably started slowly shifting from conservative leaving to liberal leaning in the 60s/70s. By the time the 24 hour news cycle became ingrained late 80s/early 90s, most of the MSM had fully shifted to supporting narratives. With social media, that's on steroids now. Back in the day the news was 30 minutes and if you missed it, there were no clips or replays so it didn't consume much attention. Add to that that our population is getting dumber and more gullible (when we should be getting smarter and more skeptical).

The demise of newspaper hurt them.
I think they pulled stories right of wire now they got nothing

I've noticed it ever since the W. Bush/Al Gore "hanging chad" vote counting debacle in 2000.
The mainstream media came out of the closet, so to speak, to side with Gore's version of vote counting.

Let's all be honest. For most of human history, news has been propaganda.

FOX News was created in 1996.
Came here to say this. CNN was still legit around the time of the first gulf war.
But they followed Fox down the same rabbit hole.
Everyone sucks now.

In 2012 Obama repealed the Smith-Mundt act of 1948..

That plus Countering Foreign Propaganda and Disinformation Act was signed into law as one of the last things Obama did in Dec. 2016.

My opinion also. It went from reporting news to making up news.

The news has always been used for propaganda. It’s just more common and extremely blatant now

There used to be some fact-checking before reporting, but the orange man turned them into advocates. I also think the intel agencies have their claws in most major newsrooms. Nobody in corporate media will dare to embarrass the machine anymore. Assange is being slowly killed for exposing war crimes.

There have always been moments of bias/propaganda throughout US history but it started getting really consistent during the Clinton scandal, further declining during the Obama presidency and the Trump run in 15/16 is when it totally collapsed.
MSNBC still mentions Russian Collusion even though we all know now that it was 100% fabricated. Doesn’t matter to the left wing media, though.

When journalism because dominated by the same type of people from the same region of the country from the same universities and stop having anything in common with everyday Americans.
Posted on 3/29/24 at 4:35 pm to Smeg
it has always been that way. you just couldn't tell and still can't tell looking back. in hindsight, it looks tame compared to now, but it was very bad compared to those times. how many old articles can you find that point out how socialist and communist FDR was? FDR was more extreme for his day than obama was for his. you just can't see that, apparently.

I am in my 50s and I remember the news referring to hardline USSR communist party members as "right wing" so I am going to say it has been a long time.

Bingo. We had a week that made Saigon look like child's play in comparison where Afghans were literally falling off of planes, 13 Marines lost their life due to Potato's incompetency, $85B in weaponry left behind, etc. and MSNBC only talked about January 6th that entire week. MSNBC's daily headline for 3 1/2 years to date is exclusively J6 -- what a shitshow the MSM propaganda is. Walter Cronkite "just the facts" journalism and reporting is a distant memory.
