They are getting roasted in the comments section.

Went to the aquarium and zoo in New Orleans last year and was surpised at the poor condition and especially how they cut the size of the aquarium in half to build the insectarium. The aquarium at Moody in Galveston is twice as big as the one in New Orleans with better exhibits. That's just sad. The zoo probably lost lots of funding with oil companies moving out of New Orleans. All the big exhibits at the Houston Zoo have large private donors and oil companies funding them.

Or maybe it’s to subsidize the Audubon golf course which is a financial loser every year
What parts of Audubon are profitable and don't require membership income to stay afloat?
I won't be renewing at these prices. Doesn't make financial sense vs paying per visit.

Same boat here brother. Grew up in Metry, have family in NOLA, and live in Lafayette. Went to the zoo 2x’s last year and paid the std. admission price. Thought about the yearly membership in 2025 at $250. Sadly, it’s gonna be a long time before I go to the Audubon Zoo / Aquarium again. I’m in the group of potential attendees who are required to pay high entry fees so Orleans parish residents can bring their 7 kids for free.

Orleans Parish residents pay for Audubon via their taxes (1.95 mil tax). We are subsidizing your visits.

Audubon SNAP Program: Orleans Parish SNAP benefit recipients receive complimentary admission to Audubon facilities year-round, special events restrictions apply. SNAP participant with valid ID that matches the SNAP card and up to four guests have free admission to Audubon facilities.
The ATL Zoo has some similar thing, you have to get there when they open and be done by lunch time when all the locals start showing up. Same with ATL aquarium.
This needs to be done only on certain days, so people know which days to not go.

Audubon Commission also has a dedicated 1.71 mill property tax in Orleans,
That's the same amount NORD gets (NOLA recreation dept) and more than Parks & Parkways.
***
Audubon Commission 1.71
NORD Commssion 1.71
New Orleans Department of Parks & Parkways 1.59
Orleans millages
***
Meanwhile Forman was making about $800k/yr and had about $4 million of nonqualified retirement benefits when he retired (not counting "normal" 403(b) retirement plan).
Last time I was at the zoo I too saw folks just amble on through without showing a ticket. We used our library card to get tix, though you do have to reserve well in advance, as there's a cap.
When the kids were young we had a membership for a few years but it paid for itself after a couple visits. No chance we'd get one at those prices.

For Houston Zoo
Family
$239/year
2 named adults and up to 3 children (ages 3-21), as long as one named adult is present.

That is reasonable. I think Audubon walks this back in a few weeks/months. No idea how the board allowed this through without realizing double is absurd.
FYI....you broke my heart last weekend.

It’s another failed social program although it seems like ATL is at least trying to manage it. It’s hard not to paint with a broad brush but as a former volunteer at the zoo (15 years) I wouldn’t suggest any family go while some of these schools or homes are there.

The zoo and the aquarium haven’t changed and it’s sad. Hattiesburg will have a better zoo in less than 20 years

Graft and grift - why NOLA and LA can’t have or keep nice things.

Quite the insane bump especially when the Aquarium itself is an absolute joke these days and only takes 45 minutes to go from start to finish. What have they done in the last 12 months to account for a doubling of price?

The Houston zoo is so much nicer than our zoo and cheaper admission iirc.

It’d almost be worth it if they’d let you hunt or fish even just a little.

Nah. You are subsidizing the welfare crowd.

We had a membership for years. I had no idea about the SNAP tickets. While your family membership costs $425, SNAP gets you in for $3 per person limit of 5 people. If they want to do that, fine, but others do not have to buy or renew memberships.

From the website:
Year-round, Orleans Parish Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participants with a valid government-issued photo ID that matches their SNAP card enjoy $3.00 admission per ticket to Audubon Zoo or Audubon Aquarium and Insectarium for up to five as long as one of the five is an accompanying adult to any Audubon facility. SNAP tickets may only be purchased at admission windows with valid SNAP Card AND New Orleans/Orleans Parish ID.
Restrictions and price increases will apply for special events and on select dates throughout the year.

SNAP tickets are not available online.
SNAP guests will be able to make ticketed reservations at the ticket counter for up to five guests.

The Audubon institute is a private institution, what the frick does the city’s budget have to do with it?
