There has been a DUI as long as I remember, but unless you were driving poorly or underage, they didn't do much. Then MADD came along in 1980. It all changed after that.

Sober people cause more driving accidents than drunk people.

You can drink and drive your drive thru daiquiri. You just can't get drunk and drive. Also no open containers.
What I heard was when you put the straw in it’s now considered an open container

:CSB alert:
My grandfather told me that back in the day when he was a kid, they would go to the bar in town and un-cinch the buckles on the saddles of the horses in front of the bar. When the really drunk people got on the horses and start to ride off, they would basically tip over and fall off the horse. Not a lot to do in a small town I guess.

DUI/DWI has always been a thing since I started driving but wasn't heavily enforced, open container and stiffer penalties started appearing in La in the early 80s
Yep. It's prolly been illegal since the 20's or 30's, but wasn't heavily enforced until the 80's or so. The NHTSA didn't start tracking drunk driving fatalities until 1982. The NHTSA claims that (under 21) drunk driving deaths have decreased 83% since 1982. So progress has been made and is proof that stricter law enforcement activity works. (Contrary to what dem politicians will say).
But that's only for young people. Under 21 deaths only account for 9% of all DUI fatalities.

no do texting and driving deaths
No doubt that’s a problem too, just harder to prove. That said, people don’t generally pass out behind the wheel from texting too much.

MADD
This is what changed it. For the better at first, but they've long since gone too far with it.

I read about three posts in this thread. The MAAD’s ruined it. Them and the Road Pirate’s are in cahoots.

Can you get a DUI on a horse or other animal? Seems like a great way to get home drunk from the bar, especially if your animal knows the way home.

It is mostly a farce considering how many places exist where ever patron waking out the door is obviously over the limit.
