I had that happen in 2004 and it wasn't in a rural area. Wasn't shite-faced or anything, just driving a conspicuous vehicle back from a bar after midnight.

I was riding with a friend many years ago, heading out for an evening of bar hopping, we were driving on a brand new parkway that had yet to have lights installed, posted speed limit was 45-50 and a cop pulled us over, we each had an open beer(wasn't illegal back then,) and my friend gets out to talk to the cop with his beer in his hand and sets it on the hood to get his DL out, the cop never said a word about the beers, he said he stopped us to tell us that until the lights were up the speed was 35, be careful and be safe and off we went

It wasn't a serious offense and there wasn't any discussion and PR about it until MADD in the 80s

Couldn’t have been more cars on the road killing innocent people. It was propaganda

Well since you obviously don't know what a "blind link" is, perhaps you can try hovering your mouse over that little blue text to see the Wikipedia page link.

MADD was absolutely instrumental in changing public perception. I think they'd take the credit themselves

I’m not for driving drunk, but there’s a certain hidden pleasure to killing a couple of tall boys on the way home from work.

Back in the 40s, Margaret Mitchell (author of Gone with the Wind) was struck and killed by a drunk driver on Peachtree St in Atlanta. The driver had multiple previous arrests for drunk driving which were usually dismissed because he was a taxi driver and needed to make a living. Mitchell was a national treasure at this point and outrage over her death lead to increased scrutiny and punishment for DUI - all of this was pre-MADD.

It was later determined that Mitchell was jaywalking, in a fight with her husband and zigged into the path of the taxi driver to avoid another car so she was partially at fault for her demise. The driver also stated he only had "one beer" and witnesses did not describe him as intoxicated, but they didn't have breathalyzers back then and the mob wanted justice.

Similar timeline to Commiefornia.
I believe Nancy's "Just Say No" campaign had a lot to do with it.

It has always been right. Drinking and driving is fine if you know you are under the limit. But it doesn’t take much gif most to get over the limit and some can drive fine. It’s getting into an accident while over the limit is what’s the bad part…..

If we ever have a constitutional convention I
hope you go with a legal pad and a full set of crayons

You can drink and drive your drive thru daiquiri. You just can't get drunk and drive. Also no open containers.
