How much did you go over your allowances? Ferguson will be the death of me.

I had a wrap around porch built and they underestimated it by 12k, so I can only imagine how much more you will have to spend on a home.

Obscene amounts. My theory is if it’s a forever home and you are committed to that then roll with what you want. If it’s a 5 year house and you intend to upgrade then I’d spend more time on the analysis.

Literally not a dime, because I actually built it myself.

That would be my builder’s $12K mistake. Not my problem.

Rule of thumb for most of you idiots when developing a budget.

Develop the budget then double it.

Not sure if this is even a thing anymore with the current generation buying houses.

So many people are transient these days and not committed to one area long-term.

Slow down there, Roger's alter.

Did you do it by hand with the help of a DIY manual while attending school and working full-time?

No, you’d have half a porch.

Only if it was a cost plus build…otherwise, not my problem.

The downfall of almost 100% of self built or self general contractor built homes. I can't count the number of people I have known who have built their own home or acted as the general on their own home who did not spend WAY more money than they planned. By a big margin.

I have watched friends, happily married, wind up divorced over the choice of cabinet hardware and plumbing fixtures. Never knew anyone who didn't have some serious marital discussions while building a house.

It looks good in the brochure. Seems like you get what you want and can save a little money in the process. It rarely turns out that way. I used to build 3-4 spec houses a year...never was a major source of income but was in the trades and knew folks. Have built 2 "forever" homes for us...never got caught up in the foolishness most people do when building a house...when you start saying things like "its only $50 more....." you are past the point of no return.

In most cases you'd wind up with about 60% of a porch and even more to get someone to finish it.

I don’t think this is accurate any longer.

I’m doing a home reno and everything is coming out more expensive than we thought. We’re a good 30-40% over budget (granted a lot of that was correcting uncovered issues). We’d still be well over 10% above budget even without the repairs.

I’ve two friends who are doing new builds and for months, we’ve all found solace in our own overages by knowing it’s affecting everyone…unless you’re able to do it yourself.
