Actually, no, the company handbook doesn't say I can't use my phone. It does say you can't sleep at work.

How does your boss know that you don’t continue to browse the Internet after the tests are done?
Are you distracted from the test and your next task whilst you browse the Internet?
If the boss of your boss (or that person’s boss) were to see you doing your personal phone browsing while you were supposed to be concentrating on your work duty, would they be happy with your boss condoning that behavior?

I’m not a child and wouldn’t work somewhere that needed a ‘phone policy’. That’s for women and prepubescent boys who can’t do their work and need management to hold their hand. I use my phone if and when I need to but I don’t abuse it.

There is something in policy about not using phone while working, but it's not really enforced

Oh believe me, several people have mentioned doing just that. Unfortunately, due to the DOD work we do, the only thing we really can't do with our phones at work is take pictures or take them into sensitive areas.

I hope the guys who are supposed to be assembling your next medical implant device or the next plane you ride on are as disciplined as you as to phone use-

Well, my previous boss looked at my production and debug success rate to come to the conclusion I was one of the best techs he had.

Well, the ones Ive been performing lately ding like a doorbell when they are ready for me to review. It's kinda hard to miss.

Probably not, but like I said. I work night shift. My boss is the highest ranked there. And considering how hard it is to find good techs... And on top of that good techs willing to work nights... and the fact they aren't competive in pay... You'd think he might be like my old boss and be very appreciative of his good employees.

My small company is a retail manufacturer. I have just a few employees that work for me. They are basically working on producing and the margins are fairly small once I pay the labor. I need them to produce
I tried it both ways for a while. I let them keep their phone with them and what I found was my rates were down and people were looking at the screens, for one reason or another, all the time. I got frustrated and talked to them about it a few times before pulling the trigger on the "no phone policy".
It was necessary. Its not really what I want but I pay them well for some very simple production work and they pretty much have me out of their hair all day.
As for my turnover, its very low for the people that do work for me. I even allow some people to take work home with them and do piece work. We have music playing every day and they get to pick the tune. Its a low stress environment except, I am not going to pay you to surf facebook or text.

It really depends on who you work for. You may have a high level job where its not necessary for your employer to have a policy. But I have found that lower level workers need a policy.

Lol, we test stuff for commercial jets.
I take my job very seriously. But there really isn't anything I can do to take it more or less seriously while the test is running. I can stare at the screen with a quisitive and serious expression if it makes you feel better.

If I’m not on the phone I have my headphones in. I text from both my personal and my work phone throughout the day and sporadically check fb or TD if I have a bit of down time. Our boss is cool, we get our work done then she doesnt give a frick.

I’m not sure how competitive your wages are but it sounds like you just need to hire better. No reason to treat people like children. No doubt they hate you and talk shite about you all day if you’re treating them like children.

I don't try to be one of the best. I don't event think I am honestly. But I do my work, I do get more done than others, and I have a high debug success rate.
I may have gandered my phone while test run, but I don't stand around talking. Take long breaks, etc.

Some of the people who work for me are very young. High school or people looking for extra work. Takes a very low skill set. Just be able to follow instructions and work for what you make. I tried it both ways and the phones were an issue.
