I work as an electronic test and debug technician for a company that produces electronic boards for various department of defense related companies.

Many of the test we run take 5-10 minutes or more. My old boss, who just retired didn't care if I browsed the net on my phone or text my S.O. while test were being run. My new boss has a pet peeve that we aren't to be on our phones at all.

I work nights, so it isn't like their is upper management or customers around.

Now, I wouldn't mind it, but we have caught my new boss napping on several occasions in his office during his first two weeks. So when he said something to me about me being on my phone tonight... I was a little peeved to say the least.

There is a difference here. He’s the boss and you are not.

Actually, no, the company handbook doesn't say I can't use my phone. It does say you can't sleep at work.

exactly, he's the boss and you're not, so you follow his rules and he does what he wants...

if you want to do as you please, then get promoted to 'boss'. till then, do as you're told, quit bitchin', and for damn sure quit playin' on your little phone

Na, I don't want his job. I make more than him. Believe it or not, managers are easier to come by than good techs.

Nobody who works for me is allowed to have a cell phone on them until lunch and after work. If I catch one of them with a phone in their pocket, they are gone instantly

No phones is my policy. Zero

Does the guy write your performance reviews? I’d play the game or quit. People quit bosses just as often as they quit jobs

I'm talking about adult jobs, not retail and fast food stores.

What about family emergencies such as car accidents. You must have a bunch of people with few options working with you because that’s a little overboard. I understand not constantly being on your phone but not having it on your person at all is overboard and a classic micromanager move.

I find it odd that the company policy has to clearly state 'no sleeping on the job'.

I would think that a given. Night work or day work.

I have free reign with my phone, but I get at least 20 calls a day with questions and I send multiple pictures and updates of ongoing projects. I probably over communicate to an extent.

I’m an adult, so I can use my phone whenever I like.

He does, I'll play the game for a while. I plan on leaving in a year or so anyway. He wants me to be the lead tech for him. I like what I do, but my company is not competive salary wise in my field. I'll be able to leave for a substantial raise. I've seen several others do the exact same recently.
