find it weird a conservative state like Louisiana was voting for socialists in the 1920s-30s.
The state is not that conservative. Uncle Earl continued Huey's programs, Edwin Edwards served 4 terms, we have JBE now. Baton Rouge and New Orleans have long been democrat strongholds.

Poor people are a huge fan of socialism. Louisiana was extremely poor and were tired of it. Not really surprising.
The danger related to extreme inequality.

frickin crook and thief that set the tone for La politics forever. You can blame the widespread corruption in large part on him.

That was actually pretty prevalent before him...he juiced it, though, and was more blatant.

Socialist criminal.
Yeah, I know it's redundant.
Yeah, I know it's redundant.

Communist wannabe Mussolini dictator that dragged many parts of this state kicking and screaming into the 20th century.
If he had not been assassinated, he would have been president. He proved that progressivism could be a winning platform on a national scale, and much of his platform was picked up by FDR.
Unfortunately, Huey's mafia-style politics which he used to accomplish great feats in infrastructure development were utilized to great effect by all his successors towards corrupt and economically destructive ends.
Also, the corrupt relationship between the Long Land Corporation, Standard Oil, and the state's seizure of property due to delinquent property taxes during the Great Depression is the reason for the Homestead Exemption.

If LA had another guy like him in power, the BR Loop would be needing replacement by now.

The wave that is going to cross this country in the next decade is going to erase the conservative base. The MAGA folks don't even see it coming.

He took a special interest in LSU. He gave us essentially the Tiger band as well as Tiger Stadium. As far as LSU goes I am appreciative towards the man. He did what it took to make LSU relevant.

It was like that before he showed up. He just played the game the way that it was already established and was bolder than the people who came before him.

It will be contrary to your position. Kids growing up now will be more conservative than millennial.

"Louisiana Hayride" was required reading for one of my history classes. Really good read.

Progressive populist who did a lot of good things and a lot of shady things. First to identify the "establishment" elitist running the country.
