I work for a major O&G company and have many friends at super majors. None of those companies give a year of maternity leave.

Our benefits are insanely good, but its 12 weeks for maternity leave and that matches/exceeds our competitors.

I have mixed opinions. The family is important. I do think that companies should be obligated to save a seat for employees that leave to have kids. I don't like mandates for PTO in this area.

- Only women should be granted leave. It's up to the company if it's PTO or not, this should not be mandated. High quality companies are offering this as a benefit.

- Men should not get paternal leave, that's just stupid. If a company wants to offer it, fine, it's a nice perk, but it's ludicrous to mandate it.

- If a woman elects to take 12 weeks off in a year, they should have no ground to complain about others advancing in front of them due to absence.

When I was in my 20s and 30s, and we had 3 kids ourselves... I don't think I took more than a week off between the 3 of them. I have lost count, but in a window of 10 years at one company, I think the count of maternity leaves on my team was 10, but I may be forgetting some. One woman had 3 kids in less than 4 years. So essentially over 10 years, there was over a half a year of lost time just to that. Guess who picked up the slack? Guess who never gets a fricking pat on the back when work is mysteriously covered over and over and over again for others?

Some of y’all are true company men in this thread. Take off as much time as you’re allowed, the company could give a frick about you honestly.

Which ones?

Shell, Valero, Exxon, Chevron, Marathon are anywhere from 10-16 weeks.

Get ready for downvotes. These are the same people that think government should coddle them and pay for their college.

You can't effectively argue your point, so you must make up things to make yourself feel better

- frick them kids. Trying to take away from my work time. I don’t fricking think so.

When you hire on with an employer, you are selling your service to that particular person or company. If that company wants to offer that as an incentive to get employees, so be it.

In traditional male/female roles, the mother is the caregiver and the father is the provider. I see these defined roles as being a healthy example for the child to know in later life.

With extended male paternity leaves of more than a few days, this blurs the lines of traditional roles of parenthood.

The story of some guy taking 3 years for a paternity leave, is clearly milking the system and the employer is being extorted by societal pressure.

Schlumberger, Halliburton, Oxy, and Baker Hughes are the ones I’m aware of.

I think it is very beneficial.

I fall into the group that was right outside of this offer but I've seen a handful of younger fathers get to use this benefit and I am happy they got it. Fathers shouldnt have to use vacation to be with their new born for one week.

Your wife needs help for a couple weeks after she leaves the hospital and for folks who arent scared and move away from their mommy and daddy their spouse is there rock.

Good program we should all be happy that its offered even if we didnt utilize it.

Also remember many women now work so its not as simple as having the baby and thats that. They have to mentally prepare to be back in the office as well.

My wife had a C section on a Wednesday and I was back at work on Monday. Like others said, dudes taking maternity leave is just milking it and employers take notice when it's raise/promotion time

This situation infers you had family or friends helping you care for the newborn (and likely your wife recovering from the C section). What about the parents that do not live near family or do not have grandparents that are alive or are healthy enough to help?

Louisiana has the least amount of migration of its residents so it's logical that many on this board have relatives nearby to help them. However, that's not always the case and often the parents - both mom & dad - are fully on the hook for supporting the newborn. Add in another kid that's under 3 and that's a hell of a responsibility for both mom & dad. If it's just mom on her own, that's absurd.

Are you quoting maternity or paternity? Because I know for a fact that if the ones I listed maternity is significantly longer in each of those companies

Maternity.

All of those time frames are straight from each companies’ 2024 benefits program available online.

Why?

Because you have a job to do. Do your friggin job. I had four kids, and zero paternity leave. We handled it. I did my part like a man.

Bunch of old salary men in this thread. Honestly y’all’s views on paternity leave are sad.

You do realize that if you died tomorrow, they’d have you replaced in 2 weeks and the company would move on like you never even existed.
