I've got an old BMW E30 from the 80s and it's about as normal as bmw ever got.
Easy to work on and parts are cheap but I wouldn't dream of messing with a newer one.

Friend had that issue and it was a weld seam that busted. Water pooled with no known source. Took years to find.

Check the weep holes in the sunroof track. They run down the A pillars of the car and if obstructed will definitely soak your carpets.
