I like ordering a case of Macintosh apples from Massachusetts fresh every year. Overnight shipped. They’re so good

As others have mentioned...I am a fan of the Pink Lady and Honeycrisp...but my favorite is a nice Fuji.

There is a new apple coming out for widespread distribution soon. The Evercrisp is a cross between a Honeycrisp and a Fuji. I'm looking forward to trying one.

They're mealy because the apple you're eating is probably a year old. Red Delicious stores better than most varieties which is why it was the ubiquitous apple. Apples are picked and put in big warehouses, the temperature is lowered, and most of air is replaced with CO2. It significantly slows down the aging process allowing them to be stored and sold year round.

I'm still not a fan, but fresh Red Delicious apples aren't mealy at all.

The Macs that I get at my local grocerers tend to be mealy, and that's really been my only experience with them.

I used to be a Granny Smith man, still like them a lot. But I have become a Fuji fan followed very closely by Honeycrisp.
