Best definition I've heard is if drinking causes problems in any area of your life ( job, family, legal, health, relationships, etc )

If they've been doing this for years, then yeah, that's my definition.

Someone who is addicted to alcohol. You can tell this when you start butt chugging.

Someone who can't comfortably socialize without a drink. Friend of mine does this.

I would be stunned if anyone here knows the exact reason WHY some people are alcoholics.

Someone feel free to spin this off into a disease vs choice thread, if needed. That's where we should all be discussing it.

I know girls with bad social anxiety that couldn't be around guys at parties without drinking. Said if they weren't buzzed, they'd get so nervous before we came over, that they would have an anxiety attack and sometimes throw up. That was 4 girls, and none of them are alcoholics. They came from am all girls school, and getting drunk allowed them to relax.

I personally think the definition is way too broad. Yeah, I like to get pretty drunk from time to time while partying. Yeah, I do awesome stuff and stupid stuff. Yeah, sometimes that stupid stuff has gotten me in trouble. Does that make me an alcoholic....no. Does that make me stupid....yes.

I mean, people have even stretched it so far as to say if you've ever blacked out, you're an alcoholic. Hell, I don't know anyone who hasn't at least once in their life.

Go to college
Get a fifth and a flat with your buddy
Beer pong for an hour
Get buzzed
Drink more beer, but other people have been drinking it, so you run out
Start drinking hard liquor
Get drunk
Go to the bar and take a bunch of random shots people give you
Come home and more beer pong
Get drunk as hell and pass out
Wake up the next day and don't remember how you got home or who that gargoyle is next to you

Rinse and repeat a few times a month. After 4 or 5 years of that, you graduate, grow up, and it starts slowing down drastically after that.

Doesn't make someone an alcoholic, but by all professional definitions, you are a raging alcoholic who shouldn't even be able to walk you are so into the "disease"

I know plenty of people with 1 DUI who are not alcoholics.

Alcoholics are dependent upon alcohol to make it through the day. Like drug addicts. I find it completely ridiculous that alcoholism and drug addiction have different standards. You're either addicted to alcohol (in which case you're an alcoholic) or you aren't. Period.

Any other definitions?

Eh, it really just depends on the situation. There's a difference in being an alcoholic and abusing alcohol. College kids abuse alcohol. People who experience loss might abuse alcohol. Someone who has an ongoing dependency problem with alcohol and allows it to affect his or her life is an alcoholic, at least in my opinion.

Anyone who has to have a drink almost daily and usually doesn't stop with just 2-3 drinks. Can't go a weekend without drinking. And usually people who make bad decisions because of their drinking.
