I get buzzed alone probably once a week. I've never gotten shite housed alone but I can definitely finish a six pack on a Friday night or a Saturday watching football if friends are busy.

What's your definition of an alcoholic?
Example: multiple dui's, losing jobs, wife/husband leaves you because you choose alcohol over the family, etc.
Fact of the matter is, a lot of people may drink like they're alcoholics, but aren't tried and true alcoholics. Because if the shite really hit the fan, those type people could stop drinking and try to re-salvage their lives. Alcoholics, on the other hand, will not. And in spite of all indicators, drinking will always seem like the better option.

Absolutely.
You can have a drinking problem and not be an alcoholic. Lots of people are confused.

I'd say someone who gets drinks regularly with the point being the alcohol itself not the drink. Personally I drink beer because I love beer. I go out of my way to find lower alcohol good beer so I can drink more volume of beer. Because I enjoy drinking beer not being drunk.

This isn't a definition of an alcoholic but a saying comes to mind. "If it's a problem to stop, it's a problem"

I see it as someone who cannot go without a drink even when they know choosing to drink in certain situations will lead to a negative outcome/serious negative consequences.
I have consumed alcohol alone at home many times and I have trouble stopping when I start. But if I have a meeting the next morning, I won't drink. If I have a responsibility that requires my sober attention, I won't drink. If I just feel like cleaning my body up for whatever reason, I can go however long I want/need to without drinking. I don't believe I am an alcoholic, because I don't think people who are dependent on alcohol can exhibit that type of control over their use.
I am definitely a binge drinker, though. This is much more common, and very often misidentified as alcoholism.

I posted this in the spin-off thread.
I spent 17 years in the bottle. When I tried to cut back, I would have seizures. I HAD to drink. I was killing myself by both drinking and not drinking. That is(to me) what a true alcoholic is. If I didn't drink, I got sick. Going on 7 years without a drop now.
Edit: Of course, along with that, comes all of the life and legal problems that I didn't really care about when I was drinking. Well, I cared, sure I did but it certainly didn't seem like I did, to others. I just needed to drink to deal with all of the problems my drinking caused me... There's my definition.

I got so wasted one night I waited for the stop sign to change, and it did!
I then knew I was an alcoholic...

well, i think the issue is a lot of people are trying to pick a single defining sympton of alcoholism, while obviously symptoms can vary

The best explanation I've heard. My situation is similar to yours. I don't drink at all most days but when I do I tend to binge drink. I completely quit drinking for quite a few years when I had a car accident that while relatively minor was alcohol related and scared the s### out of me once I realized how close I came to something life altering (in a bad way) happening that night. The problem wasn't an addiction as much as hating the stupid things I'd do when out like driving. I started back after a few years but only do so a couple of times a week and in very safe controlled environments. I don't like going out to bars and drinking. I'd much rather drink at home. Too many bad things can happen between a bar and home.

Physical addiction is the defining characteristic of alcoholism. Drinking problems can manifest in many ways.

I think that you have it backwards. You can be an alcoholic and not have a real problem with drinking. Some of these people are destroying their health though, even if they are keeping everything else together.

WTF? If you have no problem with drinking, you are in no way an alcoholic.
People have abused the term for financial gain so much that it means little anymore. Alcoholics aren't born, they are created.

Anyone that has to ask for a definition.

I just realized that I read your first comment incorrectly. I actually agree with it.
This is incorrect though. Alcoholism is simply dependency on alcohol. I have known people who drink until they pass out most nights then get up in the morning and go to work. They still maintain, but it isn't a healthy way to live. Maybe it depends what exactly you think of as a problem. Some people would look at that situation and call it a problem. Others might just tell you to mind your own business.
Regardless it's definitely the type of situation that can seem fine for a long time until eventually things start to add up.
