re: What's the worst punishment you either had to give to your kids or got as a kid?

My wife and both grew up when getting whipped with a belt was a near daily occurrence. When our son was born we spanked him from about the age of 2-5. We thought it was normal. The last time it happened was in the men's room of a Ryan's Steakhouse in Athens, Georgia. I don't remember what he had done but he told me I was scaring him. I never did it again and neither did my wife. Scaring a child is not the goal because they will not be scared of you when you are not there. Convincing the child that you want him to behave in a manner which makes him proud of himself is far better than physical punishment. Its better for many reasons but chiefly its better because physical punishment is an admission of losing control and it is only effective as long as one is willing to make it worse and worse as it gets less and less effective. Its also only effective when it is practical....if you ain't around you can't smack 'em and eventually you are not going to be around them 24 7.
We did not know any better but we both realized that physical punishment like we received as children was largely ineffective because it was just part of life, it was more or less meaningful. Neither of our parents were willing to increase the physicality to the point of it remaining a deterrent. We certainly weren't willing to do so with our kids. Spanking kids is very effective when they are young but its effectiveness loses any meaning very fast and it also teaches kids that they can act very badly toward another person and if they are big and strong enough nothing can be done about it.
We have never spanked our daughter and she has a mouth on her like a sailor and her and her mom get into some knock down drag out arguments....but she is 14 going on 15 and has never done anything out of the ordinary. makes great grades and is warm hearted and caring. Physical punishment works but its not ideal.

One day at a playground with my brother and some friends, by brother somehow cut his head wide open on some stray piece of metal. Blood was pouring from his head and since we weren't far from the house I tried to carry him home but was too weak to do so.
My larger friend ended up having to and brought him to my parents with me behind him. My mom raced my brother to the hospital, which unfortunately left me with my dad. He brought me to the garage and just started punching me with wicked shots to the face and body because I wasn't the one the one to bring my brother home.
At the time it felt like I was getting beat by Mike Tyson, the blows were so hard. I told myself I would never be weak again and when I could start lifting weights I started and haven't stopped.
That's rough to read let alone having to live it. I'm sorry it happened to you.

Raised by my Grandparents they didn’t play.
Very very old school, I’ve been punished with
- Belts
- High Heel shoes
- Extension Cords
- Switches
- Spoons
And my last ever was the worse… a bat.
I deserved every damn one too, with some of the shite I did. And I’m better today because of it.

Every situation is different.
I believe it does work more times than not. My dad whipped me with a belt, I never made the same mistake again. Got in trouble at school, I got in trouble at home. This didn't happen often because I knew what I would be getting when i got home.
I whipped my girls maybe 5 times between the three of them. Me and my youngest actually talked about that last weekend. She said after that first one, she didn't want any more.
It worked in my case, both as a child and a parent.

Hands on the table with a square inch yard stick smacked over my fingers. Same yard stick would then go across my head if I made a sound over it. Then put on my knees on rice. Had my hands pulled behind my back and my head smashed against the wall a few times. Was choked out more than once. Got smacked across the face repeatedly until I vomited, then got smacked again for making a mess from puking. Had to clean up the puke then kneel on rice after. Good times.
Why were you detained @ Gitmo?

I was an honest to god good kid. I didn’t hang with bad kids, didn’t sneak out doing stuff I shouldn’t, wasn’t running around fornicating with anything that moved. I got a job the summer after my freshman year of high school and basically have worked ever since. Never missed curfew.
But if you asked my parents I was running drugs and whores out of my bedroom. I remember one night I had gone bowling with my youth group at church and we all went back to the pastors house after for dessert. Sitting at the table any our youth minister comes in and asks “Hey Prez, do your parents know where you are?” “Yes why?” “Well your mom just called looking for you.” I am sitting at the kitchen table of the preachers house surrounded by youth group and ministers and my parents are checking up on me. To this day I still give them shite about that.
Now my little brother was doing all of that shite I wasn’t. And they never asked a single question.

I had to go get my switch off the tree. Had to be a good one or I had to get another.

I had pretty good parents, but they were flawed like everyone else. I had to pick a switch, got a small one, dad gets a huge switch that whistled loudly. Got 10 whacks and it stung unlike any other. I was acting dumb at school, so my dad came to the school. Got spanked at school in front of my classmates; I had to apologize to the entire class and state what I did. Most embarrassing punishment ever. Then I got another spank at home. My dad was a school teacher, and he was a teacher when spanking was permitted in school, so this was just natural.
My brother and I got in an argument and I smarted off to my mom. She grabbed a soup ladle (it was closest thing to her). I was preparing for her to wear me out; instead, she throws the soup ladle without hitting me, and in a very calm voice, she said "you need to stop; I am very upset with you". I melted and began crying on the spot (I was in junior high). Would have rather taken the spanking.
Worst punishments were having to miss out on fun activities, like going to amusement parks. I was forced to watch my siblings enjoy their time. Being forced to sit out of my team's sporting events and then was forced to watch them play. Would have taken whuppins' any day.
There were some punishment as a child that were far worse that occurred outside the home. Not going to elaborate on those (not prison/jail)

My nephew was 5 years younger and irritated the hell out me.
He’d stay the summer and I always got blamed crap he did.
My mom would buy him jugs of chocolate milk.
One time I put lemon juice in his glass of chocolate milk. My mom made me drink it.

My parents were creative.
Didn’t get a bar of soap when we swore, we had liquid soap squirted in our mouths and we had to gargle it.
Once I was screwing around and pissed my mom off. She asked if I liked playing games which I said I did. So she suggested that I play a game of “who can hit the softest” and told me I could go first. I very lightly touched her on her arm and she hauled off and smacked me as hard as she could. Then laughed like a crazy person telling me that I had won.
My brother and I were kicked off the bus for a month for fighting with each other. Mom and dad had to drive us to school and made us pay them gas money.
I grew up on a farm so we had to be in the barn no later than 5am even on school days. If we came home late, often drunk, and mom didn’t catch us dad always knew somehow. We’d get out to the barn hung over or still drunk and when he said “If you want to hoot with the owls you better be able to soar with the eagles” and we knew we were in for it. He’d say that and pull a bottle of extra sharp ginger brandy out of the milk house and make us drink a couple of shots at 5am. I’d rather get whipped by a belt than to experience that again.

Don't know what he was using, but the kid across the street from me when I was a kid got beat so bad you could hear him screaming. His dad was a good 6'6", 400 lbs. Rumor was bamboo (that was growing in their backyard).
The worst I got was a belt. I don't spank my kids. They lose privileges and are talked to about fixing their issues. They both make straight As and are well-behaved, good, goofy little people.

I can't tell if this thread is filled with movie references I don't know or if some posters lived through some horrible child abuse.
