Single, live in about 800sq ft and I'm comfortable. I could upgrade to get a third bedroom, but it'd be wasted honestly.

I've some friends (a couple with no kids and no plans for kids) who just bought a 3500 sq ft house and I cannot for the life of me understand why. Yeah it'll appreciate and all, but their utility bills and taxes are outrageous.

Couldnt identify with this statement more....I dont get why something like that is needed.

Not necessarily true. It's just the wife and myself in a 2580 sq ft house. She has a full time office which she works out of during the week and I have an office I use several times throughout the week. GREAT home layout, and not bragging. Fact.

As telecommuting becomes more & more mainstream, houses will grow larger due to people spending more time at their primary residence. More elaborate home office space is also what our buyers are demanding/designing

Or a dresser

I have a massive walk in closet. Why would I want a GD dresser?

I'm currently in a little over 2000 with a wife, 2 kids and a dog. It's a little crowded, but we are comfortable. Will probably renovate for more square footage soon though.

Comfortably? I could be comfortable probably between 1500 and 1700 with two people. I could manage being in a smaller space like 1200 if I had to, but not comfortably.

Something to consider about big houses... In a city center, there are options for high-end apartments/condos with minimal sqft. In the burbs, usually the nicer neighborhoods have the bigger houses. If you want to live in a nicer area that comes along with with a lot of sqft whether you need it or not.

I could easily comfortably live in a smallish 2br in my current relationship (couple w/a kid 50% of the time). Our house is a normal 3 br in the 1900sf range, and there is a bunch of wasted space. The living room is too big (and almost never used).

Storage space isn't counted in living. We have big closets in both bedrooms,
Stairways and closets do count I thought

After hiking the Appalachian Trail I built a small 16x32 foot two story cabin totally off-grid. I choose to make more of the outdoor area my living area (greenhouse, deck, sitting area around my pond, raised bed garden with sitting area, etc.
