We had a 2bd/1bath 1050 sq foot apartment in NYC. We have a 5, 3, and new born. Just sold it because there was about to be some violence

We'll probably be empty nesters in 5 years or so. I'd be fine with a garden home that doesn't require much upkeep.

Grew up in a ~1500 square foot house. 1 and a half bathrooms. It's all I knew, so it really wasn't all that bad. Didn't hurt that we had almost 2 acres and our neighbors were family and they also had 2 acres all on a bayou. So I wasn't cramped for space or anything. Spent a lot of my time outside anyway.

Now live in a 2700 square foot house with 2 living rooms, 5 bedrooms, 3 1/2 bath and a spacious office (it's listed at 2700, but I think that's flat out wrong). Currently its just 3 of us. I know it's all in my head and stupid, but I'd hate going back to anything smaller unless I ended up single. Crazy how hard it is to go in the opposite direction.

I was in a 3BR 2 bath 1600 SF home living alone. Had a true spare and an office/LSU room. The future wife was in the same size with an 8 year old. Her spare was her exercise room. I sold mine and moved in with her while we were house hunting for an upgrade. It was tight. No room for ANY of my stuff.

We now live in a 5BR, 3 bath, 3100 SF house. We have a true spare, she has her exercise room, and the 5th room is a bonus room above the garage, which is my mancave/LSU room. She is a light sleeper and I am a night owl, the mancave is at the far opposite side of the house as the master, so it's perfect. We love to entertain and have plenty of room for it. Backyard patio with a TV, pool, outdoor surround sound. We love it and plan to stay until we are too old to keep it up. The kid is 20 now so we will soon have another room for a spare or whatever the hell she wants to do with it.

Pretty standard way of living in this country before McMansions and cookie-cutter developments.

I really like the older neighborhoods with the smaller, well-built homes.

The thing I like about living in a smaller house is it forces you to prioritize your crap. We don't have any extra room, so if we don't use it often, we don't have it.

Yeah, I hate "stuff". Big houses just lead to more "stuff" that you really don't need.

Lived in 1100 with wife and two kids. When we had our 3rd moved to 1800 but we have an acre and a half. Wish we had a 4th bedroom and will add on when kids are a little older.

Yep. Most of my childhood neighborhood was 1400-1600 sq ft houses with single income families and multiple kids. That was pretty standard where i grew up in the 1980s

Currently bursting out the seams of our 2400 sqf with 3 kids. I don’t want to imagine going any smaller.

I think it depends on your lifestyle. Our old house was 2200 and it was more than enough when both my husband and I worked outside the house and the kid went to daycare. Even with all the kid crap. Then he started working from home and then I did, we had another kid and did preschool over daycare so the kids were home more during the day and the entire summer. That house went from spacious to cramped fast.

We are in about 3100 square feet now and looking to finish the basement for more. The space has been even more important the last few months of lockdown/quarantine.

Currently in 2900 living with the wife and three kids. Once they move out I could see building a high end 1500-1600 home on my hunting land with a nice screened outdoor space. Don’t think I would be comfortable in less space than that even with just the wife and I. That said I grew up in a 1200 one bathroom house. As a kid you don’t notice the size of a house.

250 to 300. Did it after Katrina for a year in a fema trailer. If you’re talking more permanently than that hell no.

Downsized to 1200 square feet after the kids moved out. 600 square feet of kitchen/dining/living open space and 600 square feet that is two bedrooms and one bath. Cleaning it is so easy and no one can move back in

Our first house years ago was 1200 sqft/2br/2ba. It was fine for us back then. I think we could still do it, as we only have one child.
