7 steaks smother down in tomato gravy

Boiled Crabs

Being waken up on a Sunday morning to the sound of a spoon banging on a pot and my MawMaw or PawPaw cooking something great.

kool aid. Every time I ever went to my grandparents house (even as an adult) maw maw would fix me a glass of kool aid, usually cherry.

Tang, it was urnage juice in their house cause the astronauts drank it. Burnt toast, grandma could burn water and we usually cut the bottoms off her biscuits. Old timer pocket knives, paw paw always had one at the ready.

Gumbo with crabs on the side that were caught in the Pontchartrain offshoot canal in Eden Isles that my PopPop still lives at. MawMaw made the best gumbo when she didn’t overcook it. Haven’t had better gumbo in the 8 years since she passed.

Dinty Moore beef stew

Sums up a whole generation of young mothers in the 50s and 60s who supplemented homemade food with easy processed stuff that was the fad at the time. Could always count on Grandma having a couple cans when we visited, decades later.

I think about eating it on some vintage corning ware dishes that would probably be worth a mint if they hadn't been used daily for 70 years.

Pouring grits on fire ant beds.

Sleeping on a pull-out couch.

Playing UNO.

The smell of cigars and whiskey reminds me of Christmas as a kid.

It wasn't unusual to see a King Edwards box at my grandparent's house.

and my grandmother always had this pot on the counter...

They had a small cross that hung in their house in the living room. When my grandmother on my mom’s side passed at age 100 I inherited it and it now hangs above my doorway. I see it every day as a reminder of them and the wonderful parents they were to me.

Every time I cook red gravy, it reminds me of Sundays "in the country" at MawMaws house in Independence. One of my earliest memories of life, was driving from Metaire to Indy. 2 lane old Hwy 51. Some parts it was just tar and pebbles and hearing the peddles hit the bottom of our Ford Fairlane, I knew I was close to MawMaws. Circa 1963

Malathion. Bought some last year to try and control the sod web worms that were destroying my grass. When I opened it up, it took me back to being 4 years old in my grandpa's shed.

Benson & Hedges cigarettes for paternal paw paw along with pillow mints on a shelf in living room. My paternal maw maw passed before I was born. I was VERY close to my paw paw.

Pipe smoke reminded me of my maternal paw paw, but he was rather distant. My maternal maw maw was a wiz at breakfast, and anytime I see eggs fried in bacon or sausage grease, I think of her.
