My dad did as well.

Once he went in with the Occupation force in ‘45, he was on a train in early ‘46 and delivered a Japanese baby boy. The mom named it after him.

My paternal grandparents had a house in Waveland that was destroyed by Camille, I was 5. Till this day, when I smell creosote pilings it also reminds me of them, and being on their pier.

Find a stump or some similar surface and pound it back flat.

For my grandmother...a touch of mayo on my black eyed peas and pears with mayo and cheese on top as a snack. My grandfather would be the smell of Old Spice, whiskey and cheap cigars while sitting in his lap on the recliner (think they were Tampa vana or something)

Hah! I've got that same cat. From my paternal grandmother. I was fascinated by it as a kid, and it sits on my office bookshelf now. Mine has some wear underneath and is missing one of the "emerald" green eyes. But, it's a daily reminder of my grandma's house.

My paternal grandfather was a cook on Tinian. Enola Gay crew had his breakfast in their bellies that morning.

He hated them until the day he died. His preacher's son married a Japanese girl and pappaw told him not to be bringing his "Jap wife" around, LOL.

I've got a broken off M1917 bayonet on my dresser that pappaw kept under his pillow at all times, even for several years after the war, because he was afraid some Japanese soldier would try to slit his throat in the night.

Funny, my other grandfather was in Europe, went ashore on D-Day+4, was in the Battle of the Bulge, buzzed the Seine River through Paris in a P-47 (he was a crew chief...the pilot took out the radio equipment so he could ride), but never hated the Germans, at least not the soldiers.

Sunday pancakes before Sunday school and church. My grandmother had a little candle set that you put the butter and syrup on to keep warm. Think my sisters made off with that. Plus the orange juice glasses and pitcher that matched. They made off with that too.

Cornbread. Still haven't had any as good as Nana's since she passed. And I have her recipe that she learned to make it from.

I would visit my grandfather on my mom's side during the summer. He spoke no English, I spoke no Korean. Each morning he would gift me a pair of brand new socks. I have no clue how many pair he had but without fail, I got a new pair of socks. I thought is was strange back then, but it is now one of my best memories of him.
