Picking out your own cereal and eating it out of wooden bowls she had. Little things that stay with you for a lifetime.

There were distinct smells that I can still smell

My grandfather farmed cotton in the Cottonport area, and when the ground gets turned in the spring, or cotton plants start blooming, brings me back to the ‘70’s

When I was in elementary school my grandparents lived two blocks from school and almost everyday I would go get a P&J sandwich.... then walk home 6 blocks away.

Wuss. I had to walk 6 miles. And it was uphill both ways.

My grandad called anything that was squeezed from a bottle or tube (glue, toothpaste, antibiotic ointment, etc.) "jism."

As a a kid, I snickered every time he said that. He was pretty damn square, so I doubt he really knew why it was so funny...or maybe he was a master comedian, continually playing a gag on my grandmother, who was even more the square, schoolmarm Sunday-school-teacher type, and was laughing all along, silently. After all, he was known to respond to her frequent nagging by telling her to "shut up and eat your biscuit."

Anyway, I've passed the tradition along to my family, where it's taken on a whole new life during this pandemic, with the dispensing of sanitizer becoming a "shot of jism." Makes my wife bitch every time I or my son say it, which is funny enough in its own right.

One more story about granddaddy, unrelated to the topic -- He was an elementary school principal for like 40 years. When I was in high school my PE class was inside one day because of rain and the coach was sitting around reading the paper and talking to us when for some reason the fact that Mr. Soandso was my grandfather came up.

Turns out, my grandfather had given the coach his first teaching job, years ago, and he proceeds to tell me about the job interview. He asked granddaddy what kind of PE equipment they had at the school and granddaddy looked him dead in the eyes and said, "well, the fellow that was here before you had some pretty big balls. He let the kids kick them all around the playground. We can get you some big balls, too, if you need them."

LSU baseball reminds me of my grandpa. He took me to games during the Ben McDonald days as a kid. Miss him. My grandma is still alive and I don’t talk to her as much as I should. I’ll call her today.

My other grandparents lived at Toledo Bend, so every time I go by there, hear about it, etc I think of them. My grandpa had satellite and we watched Cubs and Braves games when I went up there for try summer, so that also reminds me of them.

I have the salt and pepper shaker that came from my maternal grandmothers house. Maw Maw.

I think about her every time I use it.

Also, I cooked a gumbo yesterday and I still use her gumbo pot. Just yesterday I was thinking that any rational thought would be to get a new pot as this one is 80 years old, is roundish on the bottom due to her gas stove and doesn’t conduct heat worth a shite.

I will not get another gumbo pot amd will struggle with this one until the day I die. The two things above made me think of my maw maw and paw paw all day and that invaluable.

Plus, I put a rabbit in the gumbo. Eating rabbit always makes me think of a specific hunting trip with my paw paw where I killed 6 squirrels and a rabbit one morning. I’ll never forget that morning.
