When I was 16 my father kept a pistol pointed at my head for about three hours.

While in college, I worked one summer in Yellowstone Nat. Park. Having arrived a week early, I was just walking around, sight seeing. Found a huge set of bear tracks in the snow & for no sane reason, started following them along side of the woods. 10-15 minutes into my walk, a Park Ranger strolled into my path & said these words I still shudder over at times: 'you do know that there is a grizzly at the end of these foot prints?" Over the course of the summer I saw.....from a distance.....several grizzlies in the wild. Scary isn't the word to describe how shook I was.

This was the moment I got in a wreck with my brother in the passenger seat and a young pup in the backseat while visiting for the same brother’s graduation.
I got tboned directly into my driver side door by a jeep who ran a red light. Only damage sustained was my totaled vehicle and a concussion for me. Everyone else involved was safe.
Was a miracle of god to say the least.

Christmas 1982, utility supervisor and I took the first assessment ride through a very large petrochemical site at 3 in the morning following a huge explosion. Foggy, could not see 30 feet, massive chunks of concrete in road, 230 kv lines down, broken toxic chemical storage tanks etc. We restarted some firewater supply pumps, and emergency Nitrogen vaporizer. 25000 people evacuated that night in community. No one hurt on or off site.
The other time was opening the door to the runway bar in Dubai at 10 at night. It was a Saudi drinking establishment, with about 20 pax in full headress. I was TOLD to come in and get a stool for drink. I fully realized the emotion of a black dude walking into the wrong redneck bar at midnight

I worked offshore for almost 20 years. Been through a lot of shite. We moved a rig one day and came within a few feet of hitting live pipelines on the side of a platform. I was more pissed that these dumbasses were passing that close to the platform. Had we hit it, there would have been numerous fatalities. We saw the guys on the platform grab their vests and take off running.
Gulf was evacuated except for 5 us floating around on a barge in the absolute worst tropical storm. Called my ex and told her if you don't hear from me tomorrow, you'll know I'm dead. Told her to give the kids a hug and kiss. Phone service was out not long after. Obviously we survived it but I've been in those situations alot. I don't work offshore anymore. My gf would never allow it. They called me to go back and I told them they didn't have enough money to pay me. It's not out of fear but at least on land I can go home whenever I want.

I went into the wave pool at Blue Bayou when I was around 6 or 7. I made my way to the deep end where it was nothing but tubes touching each other. I went under and because of the tubes, couldn’t get back to the surface and couldn’t touch bottom. Thought I was a goner. Someone reached down (my cousin) and ripped me from under the tubes when I was close to giving up in a panic.
Still haunts me how close I was to not coming up.

In my teens around 1970, , I was going duck hunting with 2 other friends at Laccassine Wildlife Refuge. We were in a 14’ aluminum boat with two 3.0 hp Eska motors on the back. I was in the back operating the two outboards.
We launched at the ramp near Bell City and settled in for the long slow boat ride. Near the end of the ride, you have to cross the Intracoastal Canal and Lake Misere to enter the pipeline canal that intersected the area of Laccassine Refuge open to duck hunting.
While trying to cross the Intracoastal Canal, a tug pushing barges passed in front of us creating huge swells. We were getting swamped. I was able to turn the boat around while on top of one of the swells and get out of the Intracoastal before sinking. We bailed out the water in the boat and waited several minutes for the water to settle down before continuing our journey.
One of those stupid things we all have done and gotten away with .

Did a 360 while crossing a 2 lane bridge during a light drizzle at night. As I lost control, I waited for inevitable crash and wondering if I might be killed. Felt like time slowed down. Didn’t hit anything! Spun perfectly down the center of the bridge. There was a curve right before the bridge and I wasn’t speeding. Maybe some oil on the road.

For me, probably hydroplaning on the interstate heading home from Atlanta after the 2013 Peach Bowl. I was in the passenger seat and my college girlfriend at the time was driving. We went sideways, the rear wheels caught the mud on the edge of the run and then we t-boned the guard rail. Rail went through the trunk, missed the folks in the back by a foot or so. I remember being sideways watching the mud kick up and seeing the rail knowing we were screwed.

Was working on a reactor housing and looked down and saw that my phosgene badge was changing colors. By the time I got my emergency respirator thingy on I was coughing so much I couldn't really keep it in my mouth. Thought I was a goner.

Definitely plant fires/explosions/leaks. Working in some of these ancient facilities up and down the river, you never know. Luckily those days are behind me, only have to visit sites from time to time now.

Staring down the barrel of a .44 with a drunk belligerent a-hole on the other end wasn't fun either.
Well at least you and Lynyrd Skynyrd have something in common right?
Did you tell him “wait a minute mister I didn’t even kiss her, don’t want no trouble with you”? If not kind of a missed opportunity there really.

Mirror and some stairs.
I've been close several times. Use to routinely paddle Class V whitewater in a canoe and done some free soloing back when trad climbing. But they day I fell down the stairs with a mirror took it all. Something about slicing most everything in your wrist including an artery redefines scary in a bad way.
Brother asked me to decide ambulance or emergency run and it was too damn scary to wait.

Whitewater rafting incident in Rocky Mtns Huffing & puffing paddling through several back to back wild rapids, to then get swallowed by last one and caught under boat disoriented.
Right up to that point of ‘breathe now’ while under water.
Made top 10 carnage list on that river that year.
