In any case, from a father of 3, with all under 5 years old: When they get their own vehicle to drive. Just like my wife and I had it back in 2003. And like in 2003, said phone will have phone call and messaging capability only, but also GPS tracking. The smart phone will be allowed when they're mature enough to be responsible operators of a motor vehicle - then we'll talk about it.
Save that and read it again in 15 years, you’ll realize how unrealistic it is
I have a 14 year old going into freshman year and I don’t know a single friend of his that doesn’t have a phone
Easy to say 16 when they’re 2

Hard thing now is no one has house phones anymore like we did as a kid. So if your 11 yo stays home by themselves having phone is convenient and needed for emergencies. This is why you see kids with them younger.
The correct solution is to take an old iPhone and make it the house phone and add a line to your plan. Kids have a phone to use when they’re home and can text with friends but it’s not their phone until high school. It stays in the common areas of the house on the charger. It also helps in the event they’re going somewhere with a friend and you want the ability to check in on them. But still in this case they are taking the house phone not their phone.
It comes down to trust and maturity these things.

It would make a great "welcome to high school" gift!

Whenever they start driving. Calling and texting only.

Our oldest got hers when she started middle school. We could have probably held off another year but she started sports in 7th and the coaches used apps to track progress and keep in touch so it would have been very hard to do without past that.
The bigger problem was that other parents allowed social media apps that we didn't. A lot of her friends had Snapchat as early as elementary school and she felt left out. But 3-4 years later she realizes she was also left out of all of the drama and bullying that happened on the app and doesn't even want it now.

Was at the pool yesterday and apparently one of my kids friends (9) just got a phone. The kid was in the pool for 45 minutes and then sat under an umbrella for the next 2-3 hours on his phone until he left.

Yeah, they're able to do way more than that. Sad.

With my first child on the way this question plagues me. One of my biggest fears is having a kid with his face stuffed on a phone all day.
There's some good advice in this thread though.

Got my first phone from my my 14 year daughter. “Dad, I want to go to a slumber Party” “Moose, I’m in Seattle” ( we lived in Tampa) call your mom.
Sent my wife a text (Moose wants to go to a slumber party, she’ll forget to tell you until last minute.)
Moose is short for Michelle…….
She’s not big, small framed, like Mom
When she hit her head on the upper parallel bar and got two black eyes……she became “raccoon “
The nick names changed.

Depends on the child.
Precisely! Gave both of ours a phone for Christmas when they were in 7th grade basically due to after school athletics. Ground rules were no social media, no phones in your bedroom, gets charged in our room at night.
Daughter has been good with it 2yrs later.
Son got his taken away the first wk back in school after Christmas after he pranked his best friend that he was taking his pic over the stall at school and going to send it to girls. No pics were actually taken or sent. Thank God we are friends with the kid’s parents and they came to us about it instead of the school.
He just got his phone back on a limited basis when school got out. Some just aren’t mature enough to handle the responsibility.

The age when they can be places with no adults present, dropped off at the movies with friends etc. I'm guessing mine were around 13 IIRC.

For us, it was when they had after school things that could change on a dime. Middle school 12-ish. We have screen time limits and rules. It’s not uncommon for us to own their devices until they technically “need” them.
It can be beneficial with limits.
