I have never paid attention to another mans watch.

It is a Ressence. As you can see there is no crown all the crown functions are handled from the lever on the back of the case. The dial is submerged in an oil bath and the hands are connected to the movement by magnets with no physical connection.

Bought my Submariner when I was in Indonesia in 97 when the Asian Financial Crisis hit. The dealer flew in from Jakarta with a huge selection for me to choose from. Everybody needed cash
Got it for $1200
22 years later and I have never had the urge to buy another watch and my wife knows that buying one for me as a gift would be a waste. Not a bad investment.
If your not a collector it is actually a solid investment as you can wear it the rest of your life. I’ll probably give mine to my son if my old man doesn’t give his to the boy

I have one from 1980, wife has one from 1972 That I bought for her used. Both in excellent condition and keep as good a time as any mechanical watch can. My dad has one from 1962. He wears and winds it daily. The point of buying one is quality. I have no idea if the newer ones are any more or less in the quality dept but the old ones sure seem to last forever. All 3 have only been serviced once in their lifetime each.
Wife’s and mine are stainless oyster perpetual date just with stainless jubilee bracelet. Dads is day date manual wind with leather band. He was offered 25,000 when he had it serviced. He paid 300 back in the day at the factory store after a tour of the Rolex facility on a high school trip.
Had to edit. Dads is a date just manual wind. His dads is a day date. All still work and are worn daily.

Because I can, and because I like them. What’s the point of asking?

It always amazes me when i hear about young guys who buy nice Rolexes or Omegas when they’re in high school, or college or the military, and still have them after 30 or 40 yrs or more.. i just feel like if i had them means to buy an expensive watch when i was young, there’s no way i’d still have it, what with all the drunken nights out, and just random stupid crap most of us do over the years, especially while young.. Kudos to those guys for being able to hang on to them after all this time.

Isn’t wearing a watch a safety violation down at the plant baw? Some things have value to professionals that you blue collar people will never understand.
Gotta get that G-Shock to go with your plant FRs baw! Those white G-Shocks,some navy FRs, and a flat brimmed travel ball hat are elite status in the operator world.

My dad was a salesman when I was in high school. He closed an account with the, then new, consolidated sales system at military bases. This was in the midst of a contest in which they got points to order items from a catalog. For almost a year we got stuff from UPS weekly. Toward the end he pulled out the catalog and asked me what I wanted. I picked out a Rolex no date Submariner. Still have it.

Unlike many products, Rolex quality is actually SIGNIFICANTLY better than they were 20 years ago and light years beyond what they were in the 60s and 70s. Their quality control is probably better than any watch manufacturer. That is not to say the early Rolex movements can't run for generations if they are properly maintained.
Rolex, Omega, Patek and Grand Seiko have the highest accuracy/precision "guarantee" of any of the major mechanical watch brands.
Keep in mind particularly in the 60s and early 70s Rolex was just a solid watch, nothing special about them at all. They were fairly cheap as good watches went. They still outsourced most of their parts and the quality varied from lot to lot that may have been sourced from a different manufacturer. Many of the dials faded or aged in some odd way and despite the "defect" some of those have become the most sought after. Tropical dials (ones that have faded from black to brown, spider web dials (literally cracked to the point of looking like a web) and stardust dials (they have dots on them like a star map) have become very sought after especially in Subs.
For a long time Rolex had very poor bracelets that stretched and just felt cheap, Rolex turned that around and now has the most precisely machined bracelets out there, even if they aren't the most complex. Any watch with spring bars (save a few exceptions) I can remove and replace the bracelet with anything from an actual Bergeon spring bar tool to a paperclip. To change out a newer Rolex bracelet safely you need a pair of spring bar pliers or spring bar tweezers. The tolerances between the endlinks and lugs are very small. While the quality has gone up significantly the price has followed along as well.

Because some people aren't broke dicks and can afford to buy things that broke dicks cannot.

Investment can be one reason. Most appreciate.

I bought a 18038 Day Date at Mayor’s in Miami in 1979. They gave me a Daytona for free with that purchase and said nobody wanted them and it had been in the case forever. I stupidly gave it to my then brother in law. Who knows where it is now he didn’t wear it long before throwing it in a drawer.

I would buy one of the high end knockoffs that go for 500-600 bucks. They are so accurate in reproduction that it requires a jeweler that knows the difference to remove the back and examine the movement to determine if its fake. More than a few people have paid $1500.00-$2000.00 for one under the impression they were getting a great deal on a real Rolex only to be surprised when they take it in for the first cleaning.

My $300-$400 tissot or sieko will look the same from a far. Seems like a waste to drop more than $500 on watch, especially in today’s age of cellphones and smart watches
Millennials don't wear watches, what's the point when they have a cell phone?

f you can sell a Rolex for more than you bought it the day you bought it then why wouldn't the person you're selling to buy it for the price and from the place you bought it?

And even if what you are saying is true you're talking about arbitrage and not a watch as an investment appreciating and a used watch being worth more than a new watch.
Well what I said is fact, sorry you don’t believe it. It’s still an investment as they are the same markets some people have better opportunities with luxury goods. Anyone can get that opportunity it just takes effort. For instance my sister buys and sells luxury cars and makes quite a bit of money in the process. The manufactures come to her and say, hey we have this special new model coming out, do you want it. In this market people pay for convenience, readiness, and access. They overpay simple because they can and don’t want to bother with the behind the scenes protocols. She sells to athletes, celebrities, etc... people you would probably think can buy these cars from a factory dealer at retail. Hell she sold shaq a Maybach when they first came out. Made around 50k and put miles on the car.
But back to Rolex’s they don’t go down in value. Rolex limits quantities released each year based on the market. Just to maintain this value. They do not operate like a normal for profit business here in the states. They worry more about their product market value(even secondary markets)more than anything else. The Rolex’s that sell at discounted rates have issues or the person selling it has issues. Their factory tune ups cost usually just shy of $1k as well. Which helps value.

In my experience, new Rolexes are part of the new money starter kit. They scream “look at me”.
Seems like most sensible people looking for premium brands but Omega, Breitling, or Tags.
Or really classy people buy vintage Rolex.
